Trio Of Doom
The Trio of Doom was a short-lived jazz fusion power trio consisting of John McLaughlin on guitar, Jaco Pastorius on bass, and Tony Williams on drums. They were brought together by Columbia Records in 1979 to play the Havana Jam festival in Cuba alongside Billy Joel, Kris Kristofferson, Rita Coolidge, and others. They were named by Pastorius. He had earlier called his bass the "Bass of Doom," because of its growling sound. Their only live performance was on March 3, 1979, and it is recorded on Ernesto Juan Castellanos's documentary ''Havana Jam '79''. On March 8, 1979, the group reconvened in New York City to record the songs they had played live, but a dispute broke out between Pastorius and Williams that ended the trio. Randy Bernsen
Randy Bernsen (born July 15, 1954) is an American jazz guitarist. Career Bernsen was born in Needham, Massachusetts and grew up in Florida. He attended high school in Plantation and was active in the clubs of South Florida, starting at age 17. He studied at the University of Miami. During the mid-1970s, he was a part of the '' Peter Graves Orchestra'', which played in ''Bachelors III'' with Jaco Pastorius. In 1977, he was a part of Blood, Sweat & Tears. Bernsen's debut album, ''Music for People, Planets & Washing Machines'' (1986), featured numerous greats of fusion jazz, including Urszula Dudziak, Bob James, Herbie Hancock, Jaco Pastorius and Peter Erskine. After good reviews, Bernsen managed to sign up for the follow-up album, ''Mo' Wasabi'', with Wayne Shorter, Michael Brecker, Marcus Miller, Steve Gadd, and Toots Thielemans. ''Live and Unreleased'' is a compilation of live recordings of the jazz fusion band Weather Report, released on Legacy Recordings in 2002. The tracks are taken from live performances that took place from November 27, 1975 to June 3, 1983. It is their third official live recording after the Japan-only ''Live in Tokyo (Weather Report album), Live in Tokyo'' from 1972 and ''8:30'' from 1979, although previous albums such as ''Heavy Weather (album), Heavy Weather'' (1977) and ''Night Passage (album), Night Passage'' (1980) also included occasional live tracks. The discs are sequenced in non-chronological fashion, with songs from different line-ups cross-faded into one another. The compositions "In a Silent Way" and "Directions" had both been recorded by Miles Davis during the tenure of Josef Zawinul and Wayne Shorter in the Davis band. ''Weather Report'' is the tenth studio album by the American jazz fusion band Weather Report released in January 1982. The band's Weather Report (1971 album), first album is also self-titled, causing confusion among consumers and retailers upon its release. It is the final album featuring bass guitarist Jaco Pastorius and drummer Peter Erskine in the rhythm section, bringing to an end what many fans considered the best lineup in the band's history. Background The album features an increasingly heavy use of synthesized orchestration from Josef Zawinul, who had been becoming even more dominant within the band's sound. Zawinul was by now frequently doubling the basslines on Quadra synthesizer, something which annoyed and alienated Pastorius, who also had reservations about Zawinul's electronic big band sound (and who was himself increasingly working on a side career with a mostly acoustic band). Night Passage (album)
''Night Passage'' is the ninth studio album by Weather Report, released in 1980. The tracks were recorded on July 12 and 13, 1980 at The Complex studios in Los Angeles (before a crowd of 250 people who can be heard on a couple of tracks), except for "Madagascar", recorded live at the Festival Hall, Osaka, Japan on June 29 of the same year. The album introduces a new member to the band, namely percussionist Robert Thomas Jr. ''Night Passage'' dials back the elaborate production of some of Weather Report's earlier releases (most notably 1978's '' Mr. Gone''). What is lost in overdubs is made up in solo improvisation in the classic jazz tradition. Trivia The 7th track on the album "Three Views of a Secret" would be re-recorded for Jaco Pastorius' second solo studio album entitled ''Word of Mouth'' (1981). Critical reception Richard S. ''Heavy Weather'' is the seventh album by Weather Report, released in 1977 through Columbia Records. The release originally sold about 500,000 copies; it would prove to be the band's most commercially successful album. ''Heavy Weather'' received a 5-star review from ''DownBeat'' magazine and went on to be voted jazz album of the year by the readers of that publication. On this album the lineup consisted of Weather Report founders Joe Zawinul (keyboards, synthesizers) and Wayne Shorter (saxophone), alongside Jaco Pastorius (bass), Alex Acuña (drums), and Manolo Badrena (percussion). It was produced and orchestrated by Zawinul, with additional production by Shorter and Pastorius, and engineered by Ron Malo. Featuring the jazz standard " Birdland", the album is one of the best sellers in the Columbia jazz catalog. ''Black Market'' is an instrumental jazz fusion album released by Weather Report in 1976. This album was produced by Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter. It was recorded between December 1975 and January 1976 and released in March 1976 through Columbia Records. Columbia released it again as a digitally remastered CD in 1991. This is Weather Report's sixth overall album and the first to feature bass player Jaco Pastorius, who appears on two tracks, one of which was his own composition "Barbary Coast." The back cover photo shows Pastorius, Chester Thompson, and Alex Acuña with the band, although bass player Alphonso Johnson played on the majority of the record's tracks. The album draws heavily from African influences and its style could be described as "world fusion". The second track, "Cannon Ball", is a tribute to saxophonist Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, Zawinul's employer for several years during the 1960s. Weather Report was an American jazz fusion band active from 1970 to 1986. The band was founded in 1970 by Austrian virtuoso keyboardist Joe Zawinul, American saxophonist Wayne Shorter, Czech bassist Miroslav Vitouš, American drummer and vocalist Alphonse Mouzon as well as American percussionists Don Alias and Barbara Burton. The band was initially co-led by co-frontmen Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter but, subsequently as the 1970s progressed, Joe Zawinul largely became the sole musical leader of the group.
