East Providence Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania
East Providence Township is a township in Bedford County, Pennsylvania in the United States of America. The population was 1,751 at the 2020 census. The unincorporated community of Breezewood is in the township, which holds the Township's municipal buildings. History The Feltons Mill Covered Bridge and Jacksons Mill Covered Bridge were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Geography East Providence Township is in eastern Bedford County. It is bordered by Monroe Township to the south, West Providence Township to the west, and Broad Top Township to the north. To the east is Fulton County, with Wells Township to the northeast and Brush Creek Township to the east and southeast. The unincorporated community of Breezewood is in the eastern part of the township, where U.S. Route 30, Interstate 70, and Interstate 76 (the Pennsylvania Turnpike) intersect. Bedford County is a county in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. As of the 2020 census, the population was 47,577. The county seat is Bedford. History In 1750 Robert MacRay, a Scots-Irish immigrant, opened the first trading post in Raystown (which is now Bedford) on the land that is now Bedford County. Burr Truss
The Burr Arch Truss—or, simply, Burr Truss or Burr Arch—is a combination of an arch and a ''multiple kingpost'' truss design. It was invented in 1804 by Theodore Burr, patented on April 3, 1817, and used in bridges, usually covered bridges. Design The design principle behind the Burr arch truss is that the arch should be capable of bearing the entire load on the bridge while the truss keeps the bridge rigid. Even though the kingpost truss alone is capable of bearing a load, this was done because it is impossible to evenly balance a dynamic load crossing the bridge between the two parts. The opposite view is also held, based on computer models, that the truss performs the majority of the load bearing and the arch provides the stability. Either way, the combination of the arch and the truss provides a more stable bridge capable of supporting greater weight than either the arch or truss alone.
