Jackson Transit System
The Jackson Transit System (known as JTRAN) operates fixed-route and an ADA paratransit demand response service throughout the City of Jackson, Mississippi, United States. The base fare is $1.50, $1 for students with school ID; $0.75 for kids 6–14; and $0.50 for seniors at least 60, disabled or Medicare. There is a 3-children limit to kids below 6 who ride for free when accompanied by a fare-paying rider. History From October 1, 2015, until December 31, 2018, the services were operated under a contractual arrangement by National Express Transit. Beginning January 1, 2019, the operator has been Transdev. The service is managed by the city's Transit Services Division in the Office of City Planning, Department of Planning and Development. Lake Hico
Lake Hico was a cooling pond reservoir built on 16th section school land in Jackson, Mississippi, in the 1950s. Its primary purpose was to provide water for the adjacent Rex Brown Plant, which generates electricity with steam. Initially, Lake Hico was open to the public for recreation. The lake was closed to the public in the late 1960s, along with the public swimming pools in Jackson, due to racial prejudices preventing peaceful integration of public swimming holes. Lake Hico was built as a cooling lake for the Rex Brown Electric Generating complex. Part of the agreement with the Hinds County board of supervisors was to have a public recreation lake and a lake for the intake and the exhaust of water for cooling for the generators. Metrocenter Mall (Jackson, Mississippi)
Metrocenter Mall is a defunct shopping mall in South Jackson, Mississippi, United States. The largest enclosed shopping mall in Mississippi, it contained 1,250,000 square feet of retail space on two levels, including four anchor spaces. Regional real estate developer Jim Wilson & Associates built the mall in Mississippi's capital city in 1978, as one of its portfolio of properties throughout the southeastern United States. The mall is located near the junction of Interstate 20 and Interstate 220/ U.S. Highway 49, along South Jackson's U.S. Highway 80 corridor. After years of ownership by Cannon Management and Jackson Metrocenter Limited, a decade-long decline at the mall led to a foreclosure in November 2012, and subsequent sale to Metrocenter Mall, LLC. Tougaloo College
Tougaloo College is a private historically black college in the Tougaloo area of Jackson, Mississippi. It is affiliated with the United Church of Christ and Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). It was originally established in 1869 by New York–based Christian missionaries for the education of freed slaves and their offspring. From 1871 until 1892 the college served as a teachers' training school funded by the state of Mississippi. In 1998, the buildings of the old campus were added to the National Register of Historic Places. Tougaloo College has a rich history of civic and social activism, including the Tougaloo Nine. The ''Jackson Free Press'', referred to often as simply "JFP", is a for-profit community magazine available free of charge at various retail establishments in Jackson, Mississippi founded in 2002 and owned by Mississippi native Donna Ladd and author and technology expert Todd Stauffer. It is currently the only member of the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies (AAN) in the state of Mississippi.
