A civil township is a widely used unit of local government in the United States that is subordinate to a county, most often in the northern and midwestern parts of the country. The term town is used in New England, New York, and Wisconsin to refer to the equivalent of the civil township in these states; Minnesota uses "town" officially but often uses it and "township" interchangeably. Grant County is a County (United States), county in central Indiana in the United States Midwest. At the time of the 2020 census, the population was 66,674. The county seat is Marion, Indiana, Marion. Important paleontology, paleontological discoveries, dating from the Pliocene epoch, have been made at the Pipe Creek Sinkhole in Grant County. History Grant County was formed in 1831 by settlers from Kentucky and Virginia. It was named for Captains Samuel and Moses Grant of Kentucky, who were killed fighting indigenous warriors north of the Ohio River. Their home county was also named for them, Grant County, Kentucky. Sims is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Sims Township, Grant County, Indiana. In 2010 it had a population of 156. History The community took its name from Sims Township. A post office was established at Sims in 1881, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1992.
