Jackson Falls National Register Historic District
The Jackson Falls National Register Historic District encompasses the historic village center of Jackson, New Hampshire. It consists of a cluster of buildings centered on the crossing of Jackson Village Road over the Wildcat River, extending on both sides of the river along Five Mile Circuit Road (aka Black Mountain Road) and Carter Notch Road, both of which are part of New Hampshire Route 16B. Most of the properties in the district were built between the 1860s and the 1930s, and are reflective of the community's growth as a summer resort area. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. Jackson is a town in Carroll County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 1,028 at the 2020 census, up from 816 at the 2010 census. Jackson is a resort area in the White Mountains. Parts of the White Mountain National Forest are in the west, north and east. History Once consisting of several large land grants by colonial Governor John Wentworth, the town was first named "New Madbury", after the seacoast town of Madbury. In 1772, a road was built through Pinkham Notch, and the area was first settled in 1778 by Benjamin Copp and his family. In 1800, the community was renamed in honor of President John Adams, who was then in office. The name "Adams" stuck until the town was incorporated in 1829, when Andrew Jackson, the hero of the Battle of New Orleans, was inaugurated president. Wildcat River
Wildcat Brook, also known as the Wildcat River, is a stream in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, in the United States. It rises at Carter Notch in the township of Bean's Purchase in Coos County, and flows south through the town of Jackson in Carroll County to its confluence with the Ellis River near the town's southern boundary. At Jackson Falls, near the town center, the stream descends in over scenic granite ledges, paralleled by New Hampshire Route 16B (Carter Notch Road). The surrounding area is part of the Jackson Falls Historic District. New Hampshire Route 16 (NH 16) is a , north–south state highway in New Hampshire, United States, the main road connecting the Seacoast region to the Lakes Region and the White Mountains. Much of its length is close to the border with Maine. The section from Portsmouth to Milton is a controlled-access toll highway known as the Spaulding Turnpike. Between Milton and Chocorua, and between Conway and Glen, it is known as the White Mountain Highway. It is known as Chocorua Mountain Highway between Chocorua and Conway and various other local names before crossing into Maine about south of the Canadian border. Portland And Ogdensburg Railroad
The Portland & Ogdensburg Railroad was a railroad planned to connect Portland, Maine to Ogdensburg, New York. The plan failed, and in 1880 the Vermont section was reorganized and leased by the Boston & Lowell Railroad. In 1886, the Maine and New Hampshire section was reorganized as the Portland & Ogdensburg Railway. That part was leased to the Maine Central Railroad in 1888, and in 1912 the Maine Central leased the eastern part of the Vermont section from the Boston & Maine Railroad, the successor to the B&L.
