Jack Shadbolt
Jack Leonard Shadbolt, (February 4, 1909 November 22, 1998) was a Canadian painter. Early life Born in Shoeburyness, England, Shadbolt came to Canada with his parents in April 1911. He was raised in Victoria, British Columbia. He studied at the Art Students' League in New York City (1948) and in London (1937) and Paris (1938). From 1928 to 1937, he taught in high schools in Duncan, British Columbia and Vancouver, British Columbia. Starting in 1938, he taught and studied with Frederick Varley at the Vancouver School of Art. He married Doris Meisel in 1945 and the couple moved to Burnaby, a suburb of Vancouver, in 1950. War artist In 1942, during World War II, Jack Shadbolt enlisted in the army. Doris Shadbolt
Doris Shadbolt, née Meisel LL. D. D.F.A. (November 28, 1918 – December 22, 2003) was an art historian, author, curator, cultural bureaucrat, educator and philanthropist who had an important impact on the development of Canadian art and culture. Early life and education Doris (nee Meisel) Shadbolt was born to parents Rufus Meisel and Ann Hamacher Meisel on November 28, 1918 in Preston, Ontario, Canada. Doris grew up and was educated with her two sisters, Grace and Ruth, in Ontario. She later attended the University of Toronto where she received an Honours Bachelor of Arts, Magna Cum Laude, specializing in Fine Arts under the direction of both Charles Comfort and John Alford. Military art is art with a military subject matter, regardless of its style or medium. The battle scene is one of the oldest types of art in developed civilizations, as rulers have always been keen to celebrate their victories and intimidate potential opponents. The depiction of other aspects of warfare, especially the suffering of casualties and civilians, has taken much longer to develop.
