Jack Holmes (rugby League, Born 1904)
John James Holmes (1904-1931) was an Australian rugby league player who played in the 1920s and 1930s. Career Born at Glebe, New South Wales to parents George and Ellen Holmes in 1904, Holmes was a five-eighth that came from Western Suburbs Magpies in 1926 to Newtown. He spent the next five seasons at Newtown between 1927 and 1931, often as captain. Holmes represented New South Wales on three occasions between 1929-1930 and was then chosen from the 1929-30 Kangaroo Tour, playing in 12 matches. Holmes is listed on the ''Australian Players Register'' as Kangaroo No.158. He met and married an English girl, while on tour and returned with her to live in Sydney. Death He had completed the 1931 NSWRFL season, when he became ill with appendicitis and died during the operation to remove the infected appendix. Jack Holmes (cricketer)
Albert John Holmes (30 June 1899 – 21 May 1950) was an English first-class cricketer who had amateur status. He was a right-handed batsman who rarely bowled and played from 1922 to 1939 for Sussex, captaining the county from 1936 till his retirement. He represented the Royal Air Force cricket team between 1930 and 1932; he was a flight lieutenant in the RAF. Nicknamed "Sherlock", Holmes also represented Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) several times in the late 1930s and would have captained the England national cricket team in 1939–40 if MCC's scheduled tour of India had gone ahead. The team had been selected but the outbreak of the Second World War on 1 September 1939 caused the tour's immediate cancellation. Holmes' final first-class appearance was in the last match to be completed following the outbreak of war, playing for Sussex against Yorkshire at the County Cricket Ground, Hove, from Wednesday 30 August to Friday 1 September. Jac Holmes
Jac Holmes (18 January 1993 - 23 October 2017) was a British volunteer with the Kurdish YPG militia who fought against ISIL in Syria from January 2015 until his death in Raqqa on 23 October 2017 while clearing mines from the city. Holmes was a former IT worker and decorator from Poole in Dorset. He had no military experience before traveling to Syria in January 2015, shortly after he turned 22. Holmes did three tours of northern Syria with the YPG and featured regularly in international media about foreign fighters with Kurdish-led forces, including the Channel 4 documentary 'Frontline Fighting: The Brits Battling ISIS'. His death came four days after the Syrian Democratic Forces declared the liberation of Raqqa.
