Jack Bizlall
Jack Bizlall (23 July 1946 - ) is a trade unionist, teacher and former elected member of parliament (MP) of Mauritius. He is also known as Jacques Brizlall. Early life and career Jack Bizlall grew up in Médine. His first name was given to him in honour of his father's friend who was killed in action as a soldier during World War II. Although he wanted to become a priest he trained to become a primary school teacher. He taught at St. François school (Baie-du-Cap) and Notre Dame de la Paix school. He left the teaching profession in 1976 as he was frustrated by the poor objectives of the educational system. His wife encouraged him to take up trade unionism after the birth of their daughter Véronique. From 1972 to 1976 he was an active member of the Federation of Civil Service Union (FCSU). Mauritius ( ; french: Maurice, link=no ; mfe, label=Mauritian Creole, Moris ), officially the Republic of Mauritius, is an island nation in the Indian Ocean about off the southeast coast of the African continent, east of Madagascar. Mouvement Militant Mauricien
The Mouvement Militant Mauricien (MMM) ( en, Mauritian Militant Movement) is a left-wing socialist political party in Mauritius. The party was formed by a group of students in the late 1960s. The MMM advocates what it sees as a "fairer" society, without discrimination on the basis of social class, race, community, caste, religion, gender or sexual orientation. In the general election of 2014, the MMM became the second largest party in the National Assembly of Mauritius with 12 Members of Parliament, and the second largest party at the municipal level, with 4 councillors. Paul Bérenger
Paul Raymond Bérenger GCSK, MP (born 26 March 1945) is a Mauritian politician who was Prime Minister of Mauritius from 2003 to 2005. He has been Leader of the Opposition on several occasions – from 1983 to 1987, 1997 to 2000, 2005 to 2006, 2007 to 2013, October 2013 to 15 September 2014, and again from December 2014 to December 2016 where he was replaced by Xavier-Luc Duval. Following his party's defeat in the 2014 general elections, he became Leader of the Opposition for the sixth time, making him the longest ever to serve in this constitutional position. He was also Deputy Prime Minister from 1995 to 1997 and again from 2000 to 2003, and he was a cabinet minister in the government of Anerood Jugnauth in 1982 and 1991. The Caisse Noire Affair was a scandal which exposed the illegal practices within the national airline carrier Air Mauritius between 1981 and 2001. History The illicit bank account had been set up following Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam's request for funds in 1981 to assist ''Advance'' which was the ailing propaganda newspaper of the Labour Party. In October 2001 Gérard Tyack, who was General Manager and Financial Director of Air Mauritius, revealed details of the Swiss bank account in Geneva for the payment to officials of Air Mauritius, journalists and politicians. The funds had also been used to finance political newspapers, electoral campaigns, purchase of private cars for Sir Harry's wife and their daughters' overseas studies.
