Jaap Murre
Jacob Pieter "Jaap" Murre (18 September 1929 – 9 April 2023) was a Dutch mathematician specializing in algebraic geometry. He was a professor of mathematics at Leiden University. Career Murre was born on 18 September 1929 in Baarland. At his small primary school one of his classmates and friends was later botanist . Murre studied mathematics at Leiden University and in 1957 he obtained his doctorate under Hendrik Kloosterman with a thesis titled: "Over multipliciteiten van maximaal samenhangende bossen". In 1959 he was appointed associate professor (lector) at Leiden University. In 1961 he became professor of mathematics at the same institute, with a teaching assignment in algebraic geometry. He retired in 1994. Murre Jacob
''Uria'' is a genus of seabirds in the auk family known in Britain as guillemots, in most of North America as murres, and in Newfoundland and Labrador as turr. These are medium-sized birds with mainly brown or black plumage in the breeding season. They breed on the coasts of the northern Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Taxonomy The genus ''Uria'' was introduced by the French zoologist Mathurin Jacques Brisson in 1760 with the common murre (''Uria aalge'') as the type species. The genus name is from Ancient Greek ''ouria'', a waterbird mentioned by Athenaeus. The English "guillemot" is from French ''guillemot'' probably derived from ''Guillaume'', "William". "Murre" is of uncertain origins, but may imitate the call of the common guillemot. ''Uria'' auks are relatives of the razorbill, little auk and the extinct great auk and together make up the tribe Alcini. Algebraic Geometry
Algebraic geometry is a branch of mathematics, classically studying zeros of multivariate polynomials. Modern algebraic geometry is based on the use of abstract algebraic techniques, mainly from commutative algebra, for solving geometrical problems about these sets of zeros. The fundamental objects of study in algebraic geometry are algebraic varieties, which are geometric manifestations of solutions of systems of polynomial equations. Examples of the most studied classes of algebraic varieties are: plane algebraic curves, which include lines, circles, parabolas, ellipses, hyperbolas, cubic curves like elliptic curves, and quartic curves like lemniscates and Cassini ovals. Baarland
Baarland is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Borsele, and lies about 21 km east of Middelburg. History The village was first mentioned in 1295 as Bae(r)land, and means "barren land". Baarland is a road village which developed in the Middle Ages on a ridge. In 1014, a North Sea flood resulted in the creation of the Oost-Borsele island. The hamlets on the island formed the '' Heerlijkheid'' Baarland. In 1295, an army of the County of Flanders landed in Baarland to revenge the plundering of Floris V, Count of Holland and Zeeland. Hendrik Kloosterman
Hendrik Douwe Kloosterman (9 April 1900 – 6 May 1968) was a Dutch mathematician, known for his work in number theory (in particular, for introducing Kloosterman sums) and in representation theory. After completing his master's degree at Leiden University from 1918–1922 he studied at the University of Copenhagen with Harald Bohr and the University of Oxford with G. H. Hardy. In 1924 he received his Ph.D. in Leiden under supervision of J. C. Kluyver. From 1926 to 1928 he studied at the universities of Göttingen and Hamburg, and he was assistant at the University of Münster from 1928-1930. Kloosterman was appointed ''lector'' (associate professorship) at Leiden University in 1930 and full professor in 1947.
