J Aidan Carney
J Aidan Carney (born 1934 in County Roscommon, Ireland), is a pathologist associated with the Mayo Clinic.Janice L. Pasieka, James A, et al. "Surgical Endocrinopathies: Clinical Management and the Founding Figures", page 228 He is best known for describing what became known as Carney syndrome, the separate phenomenon of Carney's triad, and Carney-Stratakis syndrome. He graduated in medicine from University College Dublin in 1959, and interned in St. Vincent's. After further work in Dublin he moved to the Mayo Clinic in 1962, becoming consultant there in 1966. Pathology
Pathology is the study of the causes and effects of disease or injury. The word ''pathology'' also refers to the study of disease in general, incorporating a wide range of biology research fields and medical practices. Carney Syndrome
Carney complex and its subsets LAMB syndrome and NAME syndrome are autosomal dominant conditions comprising myxomas of the heart and skin, hyperpigmentation of the skin (lentiginosis), and endocrine overactivity. It is distinct from Carney's triad. Approximately 7% of all cardiac myxomas are associated with Carney complex. Presentation The spotty skin pigmentation and lentigines occur most commonly on the face, especially on the lips, eyelids, conjunctiva and oral mucosa. Cardiac myxomas may lead to embolic strokes and heart failure and may present with fever, joint pain, shortness of breath, diastolic rumble and tumor plop. Myxomas may also occur outside the heart, usually in the skin and breast. Endocrine tumors may manifest as disorders such as Cushing syndrome.
