JW3
JW3, also known as Jewish Community Centre London, is an arts, culture and entertainment venue, an educational facility and a social and community hub in north London. It is located at 341–351 Finchley Road, London, and opened on 29 September 2013. "Describing itself as a new postcode for Jewish life", the name "JW3" is a wordplay on its postal address, which is in the NW3 postcode area. Vivien Duffield, whose idea it was, contributed £40m of the project's £50m cost – over the 10 years it took to bring it to reality – through the Clore Duffield Foundation. It was inspired by her 2003 visit to the Jewish Community Centre in Manhattan, New York. Facilities The 35,000 square foot building, which includes a 270-seat auditorium, a 60-seat cinema, a restaurant and bar, a demonstration kitchen, dance studios, classrooms and medical consultation rooms, was designed by Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands. London Jewish Cultural Centre
The London Jewish Cultural Centre (LJCC; formerly the Spiro Institute) was a charitable organisation based (from 2005) at Ivy House, the former home of prima ballerina Anna Pavlova, in North End Road, Golders Green, London. It provided an educational programme of courses, events and leisure activities. In November 2014 it was announced that the London Jewish Cultural Centre would merge with JW3, the Jewish Community Centre London. JW3 and LJCC merged in March 2015, forming a single, enhanced organisation. The merged organisation runs a variety of events from the JW3 site on Finchley Road, London. History The LJCC was previously known as the Spiro Institute. The Spiro Institute was created by Robin Spiro and his wife Nitza, who was its Executive Director from 1983 to 1998. Organisation Louise Jacobs succeeded Trudy Gold as Chief Executive in 2011 and remained so until 31 January 2015, when she stepped down to be succeeded by Raymond Simonson, Chief Executive of JW3. Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands
Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands is a practice of architects, urban designers and masterplanners established in 1986 and practising out of London. History Alex Lifschutz and Ian Davidson met working on the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank Headquarters for Foster and Partners, and formed Lifschutz Davidson in 1986. The practice became resident in Richard Rogers' Thames Wharf Studios in 1989 having collaborated on the roof extension, and became well known in the 1990s for work on London's South Bank with the Coin Street Community Builders, including the OXO Tower and Broadwall social housing. After the death of Ian Davidson in 2003 the practice became Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands with Paul Sandilands as Director. It moved to the former Island Records home in St Peter's Square, Hammersmith, purchasing the building from the then owners of Island, Universal Music, and converting the former Royal Laundry to a large open-plan studio.
