JUQUEEN
JUQUEEN was a Blue Gene/Q system supercomputer built by IBM. Financed by the Helmholtz Association and the Gauss Centre for Supercomputing (GCS) in equal parts from federal funds and state funds from North Rhine-Westphalia, it was put into operation in 2012 at the Forschungszentrum Jülich as the successor to the JUGENE supercomputer. JUQUEEN was the fastest computer in Europe and ranked 5th on the TOP500 list of the most powerful supercomputers. It was also one of the most energy-efficient systems in the world for its time and ranked 5th on the Green500 list. It consisted of 458,752 processor cores and had a maximum computing power of 5.9 petaflops. Blue Gene/Q
Blue Gene is an IBM project aimed at designing supercomputers that can reach operating speeds in the petaFLOPS (PFLOPS) range, with low power consumption. The project created three generations of supercomputers, Blue Gene/L, Blue Gene/P, and Blue Gene/Q. During their deployment, Blue Gene systems often led the TOP500 and Green500 rankings of the most powerful and most power-efficient supercomputers, respectively. Blue Gene systems have also consistently scored top positions in the Graph500 list. The project was awarded the 2009 National Medal of Technology and Innovation. As of 2015, IBM seems to have ended the development of the Blue Gene family though no public announcement has been made. JUGENE
JUGENE (''Jülich Blue Gene'') was a supercomputer built by IBM for Forschungszentrum Jülich in Germany. It was based on the Blue Gene#Blue Gene/P, Blue Gene/P and succeeded the Jülich Research Centre#JUBL, JUBL based on an earlier design. It was at the introduction the second fastest computer in the world, and the month before its decommissioning in July 2012 it was still at the 25th position in the TOP500 list. The computer was owned by the "Jülich Supercomputing Centre" (JSC) and the Gauss Centre for Supercomputing. With 65,536 PowerPC 400#PowerPC 450, PowerPC 450 cores, clocked at 850 MHz and housed in 16 cabinets the computer reaches a peak processing power of 222.8 FLOPS, TFLOPS (Rpeak). JUWELS
JUWELS is a supercomputer developed by Atos Forschungszentrum Jülich, capable of 70.980 petaflops (the speed is for JUWELS Booster Module). It replaced the now disused JUQUEEN supercomputer. JUWELS Booster Module is ranked as the eight fastest supercomputer in the world. The JUWELS Booster Module is part of a modular system architecture and a second Xeon based JUWELS Module ranks separately as the 52nd fastest supercomputer in the world. JUWELS Booster Module uses AMD EPYC processors with Nvidia A100 GPUs for acceleration. The Gauss Centre for Supercomputing (GCS) combines the three national supercomputing centres HLRS (High Performance Computing Center Stuttgart), JSC (Jülich Supercomputing Centre), and LRZ (Leibniz Supercomputing Centre, Garching near Munich) into Germany’s Tier-0 supercomputing institution. TOP500
The TOP500 project ranks and details the 500 most powerful non-distributed computing, distributed computer systems in the world. The project was started in 1993 and publishes an updated list of the supercomputers twice a year. The first of these updates always coincides with the International Supercomputing Conference in June, and the second is presented at the ACM/IEEE Supercomputing Conference in November. A supercomputer is a computer with a high level of performance as compared to a general-purpose computer. The performance of a supercomputer is commonly measured in floating-point operations per second ( FLOPS) instead of million instructions per second (MIPS). Since 2017, there have existed supercomputers which can perform over 1017 FLOPS (a hundred quadrillion FLOPS, 100 petaFLOPS or 100 PFLOPS). For comparison, a desktop computer has performance in the range of hundreds of gigaFLOPS (1011) to tens of teraFLOPS (1013).
