''JTBC Newsroom'' is the flagship nightly newscast of South Korean television network JTBC. The newscast is aired from 19:30-20:30 KST and 18:00-18:30 on weekends. ''JTBC Newsroom'' replaced two of its predecessors, ''JTBC News 10'' and ''JTBC News 9''. It is presented by Oh Dae-young and Ahn Na-kyung on weekdays, and Han Min-yong on weekends. History Etymology Sohn Suk-hee has clarified that the name of the program has nothing to do with the American drama '' The Newsroom'', which he only watched for about ten minutes. JTBC (shortened from ''Joongang Tongyang Broadcasting Company'' (; stylized as jtbc) is a South Korean nationwide pay television network. Its primary shareholder is JoongAng Holdings, with a 25% stake. It was launched on 1 December 2011. JTBC is a generalist channel, with programming consisting of television series, variety shows, and news broadcasting; its news division is held in similar regard to the three main terrestrial networks in South Korea. Cheong Wa Dae ( ko, 청와대; Hanja: ; ), also known as the Blue House, is a public park that formerly served as the executive office and official residence of the president of South Korea from 1948 to 2022. It is located in the Jongno district of the South Korean capital Seoul. Cheong Wa Dae is in fact a complex of multiple buildings, built largely in the traditional Korean architectural style with some modern architectural elements and facilities. Choi Soon-sil (; born June 23, 1956) is an individual known primarily for her involvement in the 2016 South Korean political scandal, which stemmed from her influence over the 11th President of South Korea, Park Geun-hye. Biography Choi Soon-sil was born on June 23, 1956 as the fifth daughter in her family. Choi's father is Choi Tae-min, who was the leader of a cult combining various elements of Buddhism, Christianity, and traditional Korean Shamanism. Her mother is Im Sun-yi. She is alleged to have founded the " Eight Fairies" group associated with the impeachment of President Park Geun-hye. She claimed to have entered Dankook University in 1975. However, upon later research it was discovered that she was only auditing classes. She was married to Kim Young-ho from 1982 to 1986 and they had a son in 1983. Seo Bok-hyun (born June 10, 1983) is a South Korean journalist and the former anchor of JTBC Newsroom. Biography Seo graduated with a bachelor's degree in sociology at Korea University. He started his career at MBN in 2010 as a reporter in its social affairs division before leaving for JTBC. He became known through his coverage of the Sewol ferry disaster, where he stayed for three months to cover the search for the network. After that, he moved to JoongAng Ilbo in July 2015 as part of a rotation schedule, then came back to JTBC in July 2016. He would then become part of a special report team assigned to initially investigate in the Mir and K-Sports foundations, but later uncovered evidence that Choi Soon-sil meddled in political affairs. Airing from 19:50~21:00 KST on weekdays since 21 September 2020 and from 20:00~20:45 KST on weekends, the newscast is known for breaking the tradition of airing news at 21:00 mastered by KBS with ''KBS News 9'', MBC with ''MBC Newsdesk '' and JTBC with ''JTBC Newsroom'', which gave the slogan: "News an hour earlier". It premiered on 9 December 1991, in conjunction with SBS' launch. It is presented by Wang Jong-myung and Lee Jae-eun on weekdays, and Kim Kyung-ho and Kim Cho-rong on weekends. It recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, making it the longest-running newscast in South Korean television. Diving Bell
A diving bell is a rigid chamber used to transport divers from the surface to depth and back in open water, usually for the purpose of performing underwater work. The most common types are the open-bottomed wet bell and the closed bell, which can maintain an internal pressure greater than the external ambient. Diving bells are usually suspended by a cable, and lifted and lowered by a winch from a surface support platform. Unlike a submersible, the diving bell is not designed to move under the control of its occupants, nor to operate independently of its launch and recovery system. Sinking Of MV Sewol
The ferry MV ''Sewol'' sank on the morning of April 16, 2014, en route from Incheon towards Jeju in South Korea. The 6,825-ton vessel sent a distress signal from about north of Byeongpungdo at 08:58 KST (23:58 UTC, April 15, 2014). Out of 476 passengers and crew, 306 died in the disaster, including around 250 students from Danwon High School ( Ansan City). Of the approximately 172 survivors, more than half were rescued by fishing boats and other commercial vessels that arrived at the scene approximately 40 minutes before the Korea Coast Guard (KCG).
