The Jeju Islamic Cultural Center or Jeju Islamic Center (JICC; ko, 제주 이슬람 문화센터) is an Islamic cultural center in Nohyeong, Jeju City, Jeju Province, South Korea. History The center was founded in 1994 by Kim Dae-yong. Architecture The center is located on the 12th floor of Jeonghan Officitel building. It also features a surau. Activities The center provides a prayer room for Muslim visitors and also Muslim-related tourism services when visiting the island. Jeju City
Jeju City ( ko, 제주시, Jeju-si; ) is the capital of the Jeju Province in South Korea and the largest city on Jeju Island. The city is served by Jeju International Airport ( IATA code CJU). Located on an island off the Korean Peninsula, Jeju has mild, warm weather during much of the year. The city is a well-known resort, with prestigious hotels and public casino facilities. In 2011, 9.9 million passengers flew between the two cities of Seoul and Jeju, making the Gimpo–Jeju route the world's busiest passenger air route. Jeju Province, officially Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, is one of the nine provinces of South Korea. Surau
A surau is an Islamic assembly building in some regions of Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula used for worship and religious instruction. Generally smaller physical structures, its ritual functions are similar to a mosque, allow men and women, and are used more for religious instruction and festive prayers. They depend more on grassroots support and funding. They can be compared to the Arab zawiya. In Minangkabau society, they continued pre-Islamic traditions of a men's house, and are built on high posts. In contemporary usage, "surau" is often used to refer to either a small mosque, or a designated room in a public building (such as a shopping mall, a university, or a rest stop along a highway) for men or women to do salah.
