Jörg Friess
Jörg Friess (born 27 October 1968) is a retired East German triple jumper, who finished fourth at the 1990 European Championships with a career best jump of 17.01 metres. This result places him tenth on the German all-time performers list, behind Ralf Jaros, Charles Friedek, Volker Mai, Dirk Gamlin, Peter Bouschen, Wolfgang Zinser, Jörg Drehmel, Jörg Elbe and Wolfgang Knabe. Friess had a better indoor result with 17.31 metres, achieved in February 1991 in Mannheim. Triple Jump
The triple jump, sometimes referred to as the hop, step and jump or the hop, skip and jump, is a track and field event, similar to the long jump. As a group, the two events are referred to as the "horizontal jumps". The competitor runs down the track and performs a hop, a bound and then a jump into the sand pit. Wolfgang Knabe
Wolfgang Knabe (born 12 July 1959) is a West German triple jumper. He finished eighth at the 1981 European Indoor Championships and competed at the 1983 World Championships without reaching the final. His personal best jump was 17.12 metres, achieved in September 1988 in Düsseldorf. This result places him ninth on the German all-time performers list, behind Ralf Jaros, Charles Friedek, Volker Mai, Dirk Gamlin, Peter Bouschen, Wolfgang Zinser, Jörg Drehmel and Jörg Elbe. He became West German champion in 1988, representing the sports clubs SV Union Groß-Ilsede and TV Wattenscheid. SC Dynamo Berlin
The Sports Club Dynamo Berlin was an East German sports club that existed from 1954 to 1991. It was the largest sports club of SV Dynamo, the sports association of the security agencies. The club was disbanded after German reunification and eventually succeeded by sports club SC Berlin. Sporting spectrum The sports club offered the following kinds of sport in the 1980s: team handball, athletics, gymnastics, cycling, speed skating, racewalking, figure skating, ice hockey, fencing, boxing, and volleyball. Jörg Drehmel
Jörg Drehmel (born 3 May 1945) is a retired East German triple jumper who won a silver medal at the 1972 Olympics. He was the European champion in 1971. Sports career Drehmel first tried his hand at the javelin throw and the decathlon before switching to the triple jump in 1966. His first big success came with a win at the European Cup in 1970, where he was the first German jumper to set a record with the first-ever jump over 17 meters. His jump of 17.16 meters to win the European Championship in 1971 did not qualify as a record due to excessive tail wind. Background Drehmel had a degree in electronics and was an officer in the National People's Army. At the end of his career in 1977 he became a youth coach for long and triple jump athletes. At the demise of the GDR he lost this position, and later joined the state sports association in the state of Brandenburg. At present he is the honorary jumping coach at SC Potsdam.
