Albert Voorhies
Albert Voorhies (January 23, 1829 – January 20, 1913) was the 10th Lieutenant Governor of Louisiana. He was Lieutenant Governor under James Madison Wells from March 4, 1865 – June 3, 1867. He was a pro-slavery Southern Democrat and often at odds with the pro- suffrage, anti-slavery, Radical Republican Wells. Cornelius Voorhies
Cornelius Voorhies (July 22, 1804 – July 1, 1859) was a justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court from May 4, 1853 to April 27, 1859. Voorhies, "of Dutch descent", was born in the state of Louisiana on July 22, 1804. Two sources disagree on his birthplace: ''Celebration of the Centenary of the Supreme Court of Louisiana'', dated to 1913, states that Voorhies was born in Avoyelles Parish, while the ''Dictionary of Louisiana Biography'' states that Voorhies' birthplace was Opelousas, in neighboring St. Landry Parish. He served as a district attorney, as a state senator, and as a district judge. He became an associate justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court on May 4, 1853, and served in that position until April 27, 1859, when he retired. Voorhies died in his St. Martinville home on July 1, 1859. John Van Voorhis (judge)
John H. Van Voorhis (June 14, 1897 – November 25, 1983) was an American lawyer and politician. Life Van Voorhis was born on June 14, 1897, in Irondequoit, Monroe County, New York, the son of Eugene Van Voorhis (c.1864–1943) and Allis (Sherman) Van Voorhis. He graduated A.B. from Yale College in 1919. He was admitted to the bar in 1922, and commenced the practice of law at Rochester, New York. On June 2, 1928, he married Linda Gale Lyon (ca. 1902-1989), and they had three children. He was Town Attorney of Irondequoit from 1928 to 1933, and in 1936. Career In 1936, he was elected to the New York Supreme Court (7th District), and re-elected in 1950. He sat on the Appellate Division (4th Dept.) from 1947 on.
