Potter Stewart
Potter Stewart (January 23, 1915 – December 7, 1985) was an American lawyer and judge who served as an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1958 to 1981. During his tenure, he made major contributions to, among other areas, criminal justice reform, civil rights, access to the courts, and Fourth Amendment jurisprudence. After graduating from Yale Law School in 1941, Stewart served in World War II as a member of the United States Navy Reserve. After the war, he practiced law and served on the Cincinnati city council. In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower appointed Stewart to a judgeship on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. In 1958, Eisenhower nominated Stewart to succeed retiring Associate Justice Harold Hitz Burton, and Stewart won Senate confirmation afterwards. Andrew Stewart (c. 14201488) was Lord Chancellor of Scotland from 1460 to 1482 and one of the leading servants of King James III of Scotland. James Augustus Stewart
James Augustus Stewart (November 24, 1808 – April 3, 1879) was an American politician and jurist. Stewart was born at "Tobacco Stick" (now Madison) in Dorchester County, Maryland, and attended the local school. He went on to study law in Baltimore, Maryland, was admitted to the bar in 1829, and commenced practice in Cambridge, Maryland. In addition to law, Stewart also engaged in the building of ships and houses. He was an unsuccessful candidate for election in 1838 to the Twenty-sixth Congress, and served as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates from 1843 to 1845. Stewart was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-fourth, Thirty-fifth, and Thirty-sixth Congresses, serving from March 4, 1855, to March 3, 1861. During the Thirty-fifth Congress, Stewart served as chairman of the Committee on Patents. James Garfield Stewart
James Garfield Stewart (November 17, 1880 – April 3, 1959) was an American Republican politician from Cincinnati, Ohio. He served as mayor of Cincinnati from 1938 to 1947 and then as justice on the Ohio Supreme Court from 1947 to 1959. Stewart's son Potter (1915 - 1985) was an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Another son, Zeph Stewart, was the master of Lowell House and head of the Classics department at Harvard. His daughter was Irene Potter Stewart Taylor, of Cincinnati, Ohio. Life and career Stewart was born in Springfield, Ohio, the son of Mary Emily (Durbin) and James Eli Stewart, and graduated from Kenyon College in 1902. James Stewart, Duke of Ross (March 1476 – January 1504) was a Scottish prince, and the second son of King James III of Scotland and his wife, Margaret of Denmark. James was heir presumptive to his brother until his death, and was Archbishop of St Andrews and Lord Chancellor of Scotland. Titles and offices He was made Marquess of Ormond at his baptism. William Ian Stewart, Lord Allanbridge (8 November 1925 – 21 June 2012) was a Scottish lawyer, judge and politician, who served as Solicitor General for Scotland, the country's junior Law Officer from 1972 to 1974, and as a Senator of the College of Justice, a judge of the Supreme Courts of Scotland, from 1977 to 1995. Early life Stewart was born in 1925, the son of architect John Stewart and his wife, Maysie Shepherd Service. He was educated at Loretto School and studied at the Universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh, and served in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve at the end of the Second World War from 1944 to 1946. He was admitted to the Faculty of Advocates in 1951 and appointed Queen's Counsel (QC) in 1965. Career Stewart followed a traditional career at the Bar, serving as an Advocate Depute from 1959 to 1964 and Home Advocate Depute from 1970 to 1972.
