Byron Paine
Byron Paine (October 10, 1827January 13, 1871) was an American lawyer and justice of the Wisconsin Supreme Court. His successful representation of Ezekiel Gillespie in the 1866 case of ''Gillespie v. Palmer'' resulted in the legal recognition of voting rights for African Americans in Wisconsin. Early life and career Paine was born in Painesville, Ohio, to General James H. Paine and Marilla Paine. He moved to Milwaukee in 1847 with his father and studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1849, and entered a legal partnership, Jas. H. Paine & Sons, with his father and his brother, Hortensius. As a young lawyer, he was a close friend of the abolitionist Sherman Booth. And in 1854, when Booth was on trial for violating the Fugitive Slave Act, Paine represented him as his lawyer without compensation. Paine argued on his behalf in front of the Wisconsin Supreme Court, in the case of Ableman v. Booth. At Paine's funeral, Justice Harlow S. Orton remarked that he had, "made one of ... Elijah Paine (January 21, 1757 – April 28, 1842) was a justice of the Supreme Court of Vermont, a United States senator from Vermont and a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the District of Vermont. Education and career Born on January 21, 1757, in Brooklyn, Connecticut Colony, British America, Paine attended the public schools and served in the Continental Army from 1776 to 1777, during the American Revolutionary War. He received an Artium Baccalaureus degree in 1781 from Harvard University and read law in 1784. He was admitted to the bar and entered private practice in Windsor, Vermont from 1784 to 1787. He cultivated a farm and began a settlement at Williamstown, Vermont. He established a cloth factory and a saw and grist mill in Northfield, Vermont. Robert Treat Paine (March 11, 1731 – May 11, 1814) was an American lawyer, politician and Founding Father of the United States who signed the Continental Association and the Declaration of Independence as a representative of Massachusetts. He served as the state's first attorney general and as an associate justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, the state's highest court. Christopher Wilson (May 16, 1978 – January 24, 2020) was an American professional wrestler better known by his ring name, Justice Pain. Pain was best known for his time in Combat Zone Wrestling, as well as Xtreme Pro Wrestling and Pro Wrestling Unplugged. He held numerous titles in his CZW stint and was the real life brother of CZW wrestler and one-time tag team partner Nick Gage. Career Justice Pain was trained by John Zandig at the CZW Wrestling School. He began his career as one of the main wrestlers in the company along with other graduates from the school, such as Lobo and Nick Gage. Pain feuded with Lobo, and wrestled him at the first ever ''Cage of Death'' in the first ever Cage of Death match. Pain won the match and defeated Lobo for the CZW Iron Man Championship. Elisha Payne (7 March 1731 – 20 July 1807) was a prominent businessman and political figure in the states of New Hampshire and Vermont following the events of the American Revolution. He is best known for serving as Lieutenant Governor of the Vermont Republic and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Vermont. Early life The son of a prominent cleric of the same name, Elisha Payne was born in Canterbury, Connecticut, on March 7, 1731. He graduated from Yale College in 1750, studied law, and attained admission to the bar. In addition, Payne was a partner with his brother-in-law in a successful mercantile business. Career From 1765 to 1768 Payne served in the Connecticut Assembly.
