Thomas Johnson (November 4, 1732 – October 26, 1819) was an 18th-century United States, American lawyer, politician, and Patriot (American Revolution), patriot. He was a delegate to the First Continental Congress in 1774, where he signed the Continental Association; commander of the Maryland Militia (United States), militia in 1776; and elected List of Governors of Maryland, first (non-Colonial) governor of Maryland in 1777. Throughout his career, Johnson maintained a personal and political friendship with George Washington, who gave him a recess appointment as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, Supreme Court in August 1791. He served only briefly, resigning in January 1793, citing health issues. Sveinbjörn Johnson (July 10, 1883 – March 16, 1946) was an Icelandic-born American lawyer, politician and scholar. Biography Johnson was born at Hólar in the Skagafjörður district of northern Iceland on July 10, 1883, the oldest of ten children born to John and Gudbjorn Johnson. He came to Dakota Territory with his parents in 1887 at the age of four. His family settled on a farm in Pembina County, North Dakota. Johnson received his early education in the state's public schools, completing the combined seven-year high school and college course in four years. He then attended the University of North Dakota, where he received a bachelor of arts degree in 1906, a master of arts degree in 1907 and a law degree in 1908. He subsequently undertook graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin. Philip Wayne Johnson (born October 24, 1944), is a former justice of the Supreme Court of Texas, serving from 2005 to 2018. On March 15, 2005, Johnson was appointed to his state's Supreme Court by Governor Rick Perry to fill a vacancy created by the appointment of Michael H. Schneider to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas by U.S. President George W. Bush. Johnson won voter approval in 2006 to serve the remainder of Schneider's term, and was then reelected in 2008 to a full six-year term. Johnson's term on Place 8 would have run through December 31, 2020. Two days after the November 6, 2018 elections, in which numerous Republican appellate justices and trial court judges were defeated, Johnson announced his resignation effective December 31, 2018. Okey Johnson (born Long Reach in what was then the state of Virginia, March 24, 1834; died New York City, New York, June 16, 1903) was a lawyer, politician, judge, and educator in the state of West Virginia. He served as a justice of the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia from January 1, 1877, to December 31, 1888.
