Alton Davis
Alton Thomas Davis (born c. 1946-47) is an American prosecutor, jurist and former member of the Michigan Supreme Court. Legal career Davis began his legal career as an assistant prosecuting attorney in Crawford County, Michigan and eventual served four years as the elected prosecutor. He then spent 21 years as a judge on the 46th Circuit Court, spending 17 years as chief judge. In July 2005, Davis was appointed to the 4th District of the Michigan Court of Appeals by Gov. Jennifer Granholm, replacing Judge Richard A. Griffin, who had been confirmed by the United States Senate to be a judge United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Davis was elected to finish the remainder of Griffin's term in 2006 and to a full term in 2008. Robert Grimes Davis (May 10, 1819 – March 4, 1872) was an early lawyer and judge of the Kingdom of Hawaii who served many different posts for Hawaii and the Republic of Peru. He was also known as ''Lopaka'', the Hawaiian version of Robert. Life Davis was born in 1819, in Honolulu to Captain William Heath Davis, Sr. and Hannah Holmes Davis, a daughter of Oliver Holmes, Governor of Oahu. His father, who arrived in Hawaii in 1812, was a Boston ship captain and one of the pioneer merchants of the sandalwood trade in the islands. He was given his middle name after Captain Eliab Grimes, a close friend of his father who was also once a privateer in the War of 1812. Noah Davis (September 10, 1818 – March 20, 1902) was an American lawyer and politician from New York. Life Davis was born in Haverhill, New Hampshire on September 10, 1818, the son of Noah Davis (1781–1863) and Freelove Crawford (Arnold) Davis. He was the grandson of Jonathan Arnold and the nephew of Lemuel Hastings Arnold. Davis's family moved to Albion, New York in 1825, and he attended Lima Seminary in Buffalo, New York. Then he studied law in Lewiston, New York, was admitted to the bar in 1841, and practiced in Gainesville, New York, and Buffalo. He returned to Albion in February 1844 and practiced law in partnership with Sanford E. Church. In 1857, he was appointed to the New York Supreme Court (8th District) to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of James Mullett, and was subsequently elected to two eight-year terms, but resigned in 1868 after his election to Congress. Charles Davis (January 1, 1789 – November 21, 1863) was a Vermont attorney and judge who served as an associate justice of the Vermont Supreme Court from 1846 to 1847. Biography Charles Davis was born in Mansfield, Connecticut on January 1, 1789, the son of Philip Davis (d. 1822) and Christiana (Crosby) Davis. Philip Davis moved his family to Rockingham, Vermont in 1792, and Middlebury, Vermont in 1806. Davis was educated in Rockingham and Middlebury, and in 1808 was admitted to the sophomore class at Middlebury College. He graduated in 1811, and began to study law with Daniel Chipman. Davis edited the ''Vermont Mirror'', a newspaper opposed to the War of 1812, but also served in the Vermont Militia when Vermont was threatened by a British invasion from Canada.
