Gilbert Collins
Gilbert Collins (August 26, 1846 – January 29, 1920) was the 23rd mayor of Jersey City, New Jersey from May 5, 1884, to May 2, 1886. Biography Collins was born on August 26, 1846, in Stonington, Connecticut the son of Sarah Quinn and Daniel Webster Collins. His family immigrated to American from Kent, England before the American Revolution. His grandfather, Daniel Collins was a lieutenant in a Connecticut regiment during the Revolution. He attended Yale University, but the death of his father in 1862 forced him to leave school for financial reasons. In 1863, he moved to Jersey City and studied law under Jonathan Dixon (who was appointed an associate justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court in 1875). Collins began practicing law in Jersey City in 1869. On January 2, 1870, he married Harriet Kingsbury Bush of Jersey City A Republican, Collins unsuccessfully ran for the New Jersey Senate in 1880. Lawrence Antony Collins, Baron Collins of Mapesbury (born 7 May 1941) is a British judge and former Justice of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom. He was also appointed to the Court of Final Appeal of Hong Kong on 11 April 2011 as a non-permanent judge from other common law jurisdictions. He was formerly a partner in the British law firm Herbert Smith. He is now a full time international arbitrator, an adjunct professor of law at NYU School of Law and continues to sit as a member of the HKFCA. Early life Collins was born on 7 May 1941 and educated at the City of London School, and then at Downing College, Cambridge, graduating with a starred first in Law. He received an LL.M. degree from Columbia Law School in New York City and was admitted as a solicitor in 1968, becoming a partner at Herbert Smith in 1971 until his appointment as a judge in 2000. Samuel Wilson Collins (September 17, 1923 – March 22, 2012) was an American lawyer, jurist and politician from Maine. A Republican, Collins was first elected to the Maine Senate in 1974. He was served for 10 years until 1984, when he did not seek re-election. Collins served for 6 years (1988 to 1994) as an associate justice of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court. He also served on his local school board from 1952 to 1960. Collins chose to return in Maine following law school graduation and took a position with Alan Bird's law firm in Rockland, where he was later named a managing partner. The law firm was later renamed Collins, Crandall, Hanscom and Pease. A Republican, Collins served in the state senate with his brother, Donald Collins of Caribou.
