Juno Awards Of 1983
The Juno Awards of 1983, representing Canadian music industry achievements of the previous year, were awarded on 5 April 1983 in Toronto at a ceremony hosted by Burton Cummings and Alan Thicke at the Harbour Castle Hilton in the Metropolitan Ballroom.Krewen (2010), p. 52. Awards ceremony The Juno ceremonies were broadcast as a two-hour special on CBC Television from 7pm Eastern Time. Interest in the telecast was growing substantially, with 3.2 million viewers in 1982, and 4.4 million for this year's edition. During their opening co-hosts Cummings and Thicke introduced the Compact Disc to the viewing audience, likely the first introduction to the new media for many people. Toronto Harbour Castle Westin Hotel
The Westin Harbour Castle Toronto is a large hotel opened in 1975 on the waterfront of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is part of the Westin Hotels chain within Marriott International. History The hotel was built by the Campeau Corporation, after Canadian real estate tycoon Robert Campeau was given permission by the city of Toronto in 1972 to turn industrial land on the city's waterfront into a 30-acre residential and commercial development. The 38-story twin-towered 963-room hotel opened in April 1975 as the Harbour Castle Hotel. Cut off from the city by the Gardiner Expressway, the hotel was at first unsuccessful, with an occupancy rate of only 46.2% in its first year and an even lower rate in its second. Edward Schreyer
Edward Richard Schreyer (born December 21, 1935) is a Canadian politician, diplomat, and statesman who served as Governor General of Canada, the 22nd since Canadian Confederation. Schreyer was born and educated in Manitoba, and was first elected to the province's legislative assembly in 1958. He later moved into federal politics, winning a seat in the House of Commons, but returned to Manitoba in 1969 to become leader of the provincial New Democratic Party (NDP). The party then won that year's provincial election and Schreyer became the 16th premier of Manitoba, aged 33. In 1978 he was appointed Governor General by Queen Elizabeth II on the recommendation of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, to replace Jules Léger, and he occupied the post until succeeded by Jeanne Sauvé in 1984. Glenn Gould
Glenn Herbert Gould (; né Gold; September 25, 1932October 4, 1982) was a Canadian classical pianist. He was one of the most famous and celebrated pianists of the 20th century, and was renowned as an interpreter of the keyboard works of Johann Sebastian Bach. Gould's playing was distinguished by remarkable technical proficiency and a capacity to articulate the contrapuntal texture of Bach's music. Gould rejected most of the standard Romantic piano literature by Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, and others, in favour of Bach and Beethoven mainly, along with some late-Romantic and modernist composers. Canadian Music Hall Of Fame
The Canadian Music Hall of Fame was established in 1978 by the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) to honour Canadian musicians for their lifetime achievements in music. The award presentation is held each year as part of the Juno Award ceremonies. Since 2012, the inductee also performs at the ceremony. A hall facility was opened in Calgary in 2016 located within The National Music Centre in Calgary, Alberta. It can be found on level five of the Studio Bell, a floor entirely dedicated to celebrating and recognizing Canadian music creators and artists who have left their mark on this country and beyond. Bruce Allen (manager)
Bruce Allen is a Canadian music band manager who represents a number of popular Canadian musicians including Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Jann Arden, Anne Murray, Bryan Adams, Prism, Loverboy and Michael Bublé. He also manages music producer Bob Rock and American rock band The Offspring. In 1985, Allen spearheaded the charity supergroup Northern Lights, who recorded the song "Tears Are Not Enough" in support of Ethiopian famine relief. Allen hosted SoundOff, a popular call-in talk show on 99.3 CFOX-FM in Vancouver for much of the 1990s. He now does a daily commentary for CKNW's talk radio show called Reality Check. In 2005, Allen was the recipient of the Special Achievement Award at the SOCAN Awards in Toronto. He is a co-owner of a WHL team, the Vancouver Giants. The Good Brothers
The Good Brothers are a Canadian country, bluegrass and folk music group originating from Richmond Hill, Ontario. The band's core members are Brian Good (guitar), his twin brother Bruce Good (autoharp) and younger brother Larry Good (banjo). Brian and Bruce Good initially joined guitarist James Ackroyd to form the band James and the Good Brothers in 1967. Their self-titled album was released on Columbia Records in 1971. After a tour itinerary throughout North America, including a Toronto concert opening for Grand Funk Railroad, the Goods wished to return to Canada while Ackroyd sought to continue in the United States. Anne Murray
Morna Anne Murray (born June 20, 1945) is a retired Canadian singer. Her albums, consisting primarily of pop, country, and adult contemporary music, have sold over 55 million copies worldwide during her over 40-year career. Murray was the first Canadian female solo singer to reach No. 1 on the U.S. charts and also the first to earn a Gold record for one of her signature songs, "Snowbird" (1970). Liona Maria Carolynne Boyd, (born 11 July 1949) is a classical guitarist often referred to as the First Lady of the Guitar. Music career Early years Boyd was born in London and grew up in Toronto. Her father grew up in Bilbao, Spain, and her mother in Stoke-on-Trent, England. Her grandmother was from Linares, Jaén, Linares, Spain, the birthplace of the "king of the classical guitar", Andrés Segovia. ''Get Lucky'' is the second studio album by Canadian hard rock band Loverboy. It was released on October 7, 1981, by Columbia Records. The album reached number 7 on the ''Billboard'' 200 album chart, remaining on the chart for over two years, and has sold over 4 million copies in the United States. It featured the singles " Working for the Weekend", " When It's Over", "Lucky Ones", and "Take Me to the Top.” According to Scott Smith's notes on the Greatest Hits album ''Big Ones'', the song "Take Me to the Top" is actually the demo version "complete with out of tune bass" because the band couldn't quite capture the sound in the studio. The album was re-released as a digitally remastered CD in July 2006 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of its original release. The Juno Award for Group of the Year has been awarded annually since 1970 in recognition of the best musical group or band in Canada. It is presented by the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS). The five nominees in the category are decided through a combination of sales and CARAS member voting, and the recipient is chosen from among these nominees by member voting.
