Judo At The 2012 Summer Olympics – Women's 63 Kg
Women's 63 kg competition in judo at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, United Kingdom, took place at ExCeL London. The gold and silver medals were determined by a single-elimination tournament, with the winner of the final taking gold and the loser receiving silver. Judo events awarded two bronze medals. Quarterfinal losers competed in a repechage match for the right to face a semifinal loser for a bronze medal (that is, the judokas defeated in quarterfinals A and B competed against each other, with the winner of that match facing the semifinal loser from the other half of the bracket). ExCeL Exhibition Centre
ExCeL London (an abbreviation for Exhibition Centre London) is an exhibition centre, international convention centre and former hospital in the Custom House area of Newham, East London. It is situated on a site on the northern quay of the Royal Victoria Dock in London Docklands, located between Canary Wharf and London City Airport History The centre was designed by Moxley Architects and built by Sir Robert McAlpine. Garima Chaudhary (born 2 April 1990) is an Indian judoka. She was India's sole judoka at the 2012 London Olympics, competing in the Women's (63 kg) category . Childhood and early training Born to parents hailing from a middle class family, Chaudhary was inclined to sports during her childhood. She was good at sports such as kabaddi, athletics and cricket. While the father of Chaudhary remained concerned about her education, her mother continued to encourage her interest in sports. She represented her native state of Uttar Pradesh initially. Due to lack of suitable support from the state's sports association, she began representing Haryana in national-level competitions. Since 2004, Chaudhary has been training with Jiwan Sharma and Divya Sharma at Patiala-based National Institute of Sports. Due to lack of proper facilities, she had to practice with boys. Jennifer Anson (born March 5, 1977 in New York City, United States) is an American-Palaun judoka. At the 2012 Summer Olympics Jennifer Anson competed in the Women's 63 kg, but was quickly defeated in the initial elimination round of 32. Anson was on her back and out almost as soon as her first fight had started, overwhelmed by a far superior and younger Mongolian opponent, Munkhzaya Tsedevsuren. In only 46 seconds, the 26-year-old Mongolian pummeled and strangled Anson resulting in an Ippon, or technical knockout, and a perfect score of 110 to 0, the highest possible score in judo. The strangling technique used is called okuri eri jime. The bout has been described as a cameo Olympic appearance for Anson that ended in a flash. Gemma Howell (born 13 June 1990) is a British retired judoka from Stafford, England, who competed at the Olympic Games. Judo career Howell came to prominence after winning the lightweight division at the British Judo Championships in 2006. As well as successfully defending the title in 2007 and 2008, she won medals at the 2008 World Junior and European Junior Championships. In 2010, she won a medal at the European U23 Championships before winning a fourth British title in 2011.
