Juan De Dios Conde
Juan de Dios Conde was mayor of Ponce, Puerto Rico, in 1836 and again in 1839. Biography Conde was born in Guayana, Venezuela, around 1786. He was an hacienda owner. Around 1787, he married Felicita Alcoser, and had six children who were all born in Ponce: Juan Elias (ca. 1818), Vicente (ca. 1820), Felicita (ca. 1822), Emilia (ca. 1824), Andres (ca. 1827) and Fernando (ca. 1829). As an hacienda owner, Conde ran the ''Hacienda San Isidro'' in 1844. In the 1850s, he was also editor of '' El Ponceño'' newspaper. First mayoral term (1836) Conde finished off mayor Antonio Albizu's 1936 mayoral term. The first permanent ayuntamiento was established in Ponce while Conde was mayoring the city, by the Provincial Governor Miguel de la Torre. Antonio Albizu
Antonio Albizu (ca. 1776 – ca. 1856) was Mayor of Ponce, Puerto Rico, from 1 January 1836 to sometime later in 1836, when Juan de Dios Conde took over the mayoral administration. Background Antonio Albizu came to Puerto Rico from Venezuela around 1821 and settled in Ponce. He became a landowner and hacendado and owned hacienda Rita. Mayoral term In 1836 Antonio Albizu was part of a novel establishment in Ponce: a new, permanent ayuntamiento. While Juan de Dios Conde was mayor, Antonio Albizu, together with Juan Rondón performed as ''"teniente alcalde"''. Arístides Chavier Arévalo
Arístides Chavier Arévalo (3 September 1867 –1942) was a Puerto Rican pianist, modernism composer, musicologist and music author from Ponce, Puerto Rico. Early years and schooling Chavier Arévalo was born in Ponce on 3 September 1867. In Ponce, he studied flute, but later abandoned it to focus on learning to play the piano. In 1884, when he was 17 years old, he traveled to New York, where he studied under pianist and composer Gonzalo Núñez and music master Frederick Doland, who taught him musical harmony. He quickly progressed in the development of his musical skills and in 1886 his parents sent him to study in France. He studied piano and music composition under Georges Mathias at the Conservatoire de Paris and musical harmony and composition under Antoine Taudou and Louis de Serres, who had trained with César Franck. Julián Villodas
Julián H. Villodas was Mayor of Ponce, Puerto Rico, from 1 January 1827 – 31 December 1830. He performed as a ''teniente a guerra''. Mayoral term Villodas is best known for serving concurrently as mayor of the nearby town of Guayama for four years (from 1830 to 1833) while he also served as mayor of Ponce. Villodas was a sugar cane plantation owner in the municipality of Guayama, which may explain why he served there as mayor. There are no Acts in the Municipality of Ponce for the period 1824 to 1834, affecting the period while he was mayor as well, so little more is known about Julián Villodas's mayoral term. However, in April 1835, while Villodas was still mayor of Ponce, the rebuilding of the Ponce parroquial church was started. This is a list of mayors of Ponce, Puerto Rico's southern economic center, the island's second largest and second most important city. From 1692 to 1840, the office of mayor in Ponce was filled either by local hacendados or by military officers appointed by the governor, depending on whether the political situation on Spain at the time was that of a constitutional or an absolutist government. From 1840 to 1870, mayors were oftentimes elected by the municipal council, whose members were called ''regidores''. In 1870, political parties were created for the first time and municipal officials were elected by the people at large, and the mayor, as well as the members of the municipal council, would belong to one of the two parties active, either the Partido Liberal Reformista or the Partido Incondicional Español. Magueyes
Magueyes is one of the 31 barrios of the municipality of Ponce, Puerto Rico. Together with Cerrillos, Machuelo Arriba, Maragüez, Montes Llanos, Portugués, Sabanetas, and Tibes, Magueyes is one of the municipality's eight interior barrios. The name of this barrio is of native Indian origin. It was created in 1831. History Magueyes is one of the oldest barrios in Ponce. It is home to Hacienda Buena Vista, dating from 1833. Pablo Manfredi
Pablo Manfredi (c. 1800 – c. 1860) was one of five interim mayors of Ponce, Puerto Rico, during the period of 14 February 1854 to 24 July 1854. The other four interim mayors during that six-month period were Julio Duboc, Escolástico Fuentes, José Benito Paz Falcón, and Antonio E. Molina. Introduction to politics Manfredi had performed as "4th mayor" under mayor José de Jesús Fernández in the 1846. Miguel De La Torre
Miguel de la Torre y Pando, conde de Torrepando (13 December 1786, in Bernales – 1843, in Madrid) was a Spanish General, Governor and Captain General, who served in Spain, Venezuela, Colombia and Puerto Rico during the Spanish American wars of independence and afterwards. At the age of fourteen he joined the Spanish Army as a soldier during the War of the Second Coalition and quickly distinguished himself and four years later he joined the '' Guardia de Corps''. He fought well during the Spanish War of Independence, reaching the level of colonel by 1814. The following year he was assigned to the military expedition to South America led by Pablo Morillo, and participated in the Spanish reconquest of New Granada.
