Joyes (department Store)
Joyes were a small department store that existed for 75 years in Grays, Essex, Grays, Essex. Arthur Edgar Joyes was born in Storrington in 1876 and attended grammar school. After completing his schooling, Arthur learnt the drapery trade as an assistant in a shop in Dorking. He later moved to Essex where he met his wife Mary Ann, who was also working in the drapery trade. In 1900, they married and opened a small drapery store at 4-6 New Road, Grays. They were soon joined by Mary's sister, who was a dressmaker and a female assistant in living above the shop. The store expanded due to its location next to the Market Square and Grays railway station, from a drapery to a small department store extending along New Road to number 20. When Arthur retired the son was handed over to his son Ronald. During the Second World War, a 20 for 1 club was operated, where 20 people would hand in a shilling a week, and once they had saved a pound they were given it back to spend in Joyes. The store ...

Inés Joyes Y Blake
Inés Joyes y Blake (27 December 1731 – 1808) was a Spanish translator and writer of the Age of Enlightenment. She became known in the field of letters with her translation of the novel '' The History of Rasselas, Prince of Abissinia'' by Samuel Johnson. Her edition of this work includes a text of her own, entitled "Apología de las mujeres", which constitutes one of the first feminist essays in Spain. Biography Inés Joyes y Blake was born in Madrid into a Catholic family, with a French mother and an Irish father. Like many Irish families settled in Spain at the time, hers belonged to the world of the business bourgeoisie, making their fortune around large cities and especially in the capital. John Joyes
John Joyes (January 8, 1799 – May 31, 1877) was the second mayor of Louisville, Kentucky. His term of office extended from 1834 to 1836. Life John Joyes was born in Louisville, the son of a pioneer who came to Louisville in 1783 and settled on a lot at the corner of Sixth and Main streets. Joyes studied law and was admitted to the Louisville bar, and elected to the state legislature in 1827. He was elected mayor on March 4, 1834, and served two 1-year terms. He was the city court judge from 1837 until 1851. He is buried in Cave Hill Cemetery, Section F, Lot 25. Cross Of Valour (Australia)
The Cross of Valour was established in 1975 as the highest Australian Bravery Award. The awards were established as part of the institution of the Australian Honours System. The Cross of Valour has been awarded to five Australian civilians and, although there has been no Australian military recipient, they would be eligible in situations where normal honours to the military do not apply. The Cross of Valour is awarded "only for acts of the most conspicuous courage in circumstances of extreme peril". The award carries the post-nominal initials CV; awards may be made posthumously.
