Periodontology
Periodontology or periodontics (from Ancient Greek , – 'around'; and , – 'tooth', genitive , ) is the specialty of dentistry that studies supporting structures of teeth, as well as diseases and conditions that affect them. The supporting tissues are known as the periodontium, which includes the gingiva (gums), alveolar bone, cementum, and the periodontal ligament. A periodontist is a dentist that specializes in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease and in the placement of dental implants. American Academy Of Periodontology
The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) is the non-profit membership association for periodontists-dental professionals specializing in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases affecting the gums and supporting structures of the teeth and in the placement and maintenance of dental implants. The AAP was founded in 1914 by Drs. Gillette Hayden and Grace Rogers Spalding. In 1916 Gillette Hayden served as its first female president. The AAP currently has 7,500 members including periodontists and general dentists from all 50 states and around the world. Gillette Hayden
Gillette Hayden (1880-1929) was a pioneering dentist and periodontist in the early 20th century.Gillette Hayden, Nationally Acclaimed Woman Dentist, Dies, The Columbus Dispatch, March 27, 1929 page 1 She was a founder of the American Academy of Periodontology and served as the first female President of the organization in 1916. Dr. Hayden graduated from the Ohio Medical University, which later became the Ohio State University College of Dentistry, in 1902. She was the third woman to graduate from the Ohio Medical University. Dr. Hayden was born on March 2, 1880, in Greenville, Florida, and died in 1929 in Columbus at age 49 at her home at 870 Franklin Avenue. Early career After graduating in 1902, she took graduate work at Northwestern University through 1903, which led to her specialization in periodontology.
