Jotamont
Jotamont or Jorge Fernandes Monteiro (October 1, 1912 - November 21, 1998) was a Cape Verdean musician and composer. He was born on a boat bound for the United States of America, where his parents hoped to find better living conditions. He attended the Gil Eanes lyceum in Mindelo and a Lisbon conservatory. He was a virtuoso on the trumpet. Gil Eanes
Gil Eanes (or Eannes, in the old Portuguese spelling; ) was a 15th-century Portuguese navigator and explorer. Biography Gil Eanes was born in Lagos in 1395. Little is known about his personal life prior to his role in the Portuguese Age of Discovery, and was considered a household servant and shield-bearer of the Infante Henry the Navigator. Trumpet
The trumpet is a brass instrument commonly used in classical and jazz ensembles. Morna (music)
The morna (pronunciation in both Portuguese and Cape Verdean Creole: ) is a music and dance genre from Cape Verde. Lyrics are usually in Cape Verdean Creole, and instrumentation often includes cavaquinho, clarinet, accordion, violin, piano and guitar. Morna is widely considered the national music of Cape Verde, as is the fado for Portugal, the tango for Argentina, the merengue for Dominican Republic, the rumba for Cuba, and so on. The best internationally known morna singer was Cesária Évora. Eugénio de Paula Tavares (born 18 October 1867 in the island of Brava; died 1 June 1930 in Vila Nova Sintra) was a Cape Verdean poet. He is known through his famous poems (''mornas''), mostly written in the Creole of Brava. Biography Eugénio de Paula Tavares was born on the island of Brava in October 1867 to Francisco de Paula Tavares and Eugénia Roiz Nozzolini Tavares. His family is mainly descended from Santarém, Portugal. He was baptized at the Saint John the Baptist (São João Baptista) church in Brava. A few years later, his father starved to death and he was adopted by José and Eugénia Martins de Vera Cruz. José Martins de Vera Cruz, a physician and surgeon who was also mayor of Boa Vista and Sal (Sal was not its own municipality until the 1930s) and later of Brava after he moved. Francisco Xavier da Cruz, also known as B. Leza or Beleza (earlier Portuguese form: Beléza) (December 3, 1905 – July 14, 1958) was a Cape Verdean writer, composer and singer of morna music.. Biography Da Cruz was born in Mindelo on the island of São Vicente. B. Leza has innovated in the morna genre and frequently used the passage cords (known as the Brazilian halftone, the jargon used by Cape Verdean musicians). He wrote several poems that appeared in the ''Claridade'' review. His style and his work which started to have success in the 1950s, marked the Cape Verdean music for the next twenty years.
