José Lopes da Silva (15 January 1872 – 2 September 1962) was a Cape Verdean professor, journalist and poet.João Nobre de Oliveira, ''A Imprensa Cabo-Verdiana, 1820-1975.'' Around the beginning of the 20th century, he moved to Mindelo out west on the island of São Vicente, later he met family members there. During the pre-''Claridade'' generation which was before 1936, he was the three literary and cultural figures of Cape Verde, the others were Eugénio Tavares and Pedro Cardoso. He wrote some of his poems in Cape Verdean Creole including São Nicolau Creole as well as the São Vicente one. His poetic ideas were brought to other stories inside the ''Claridade'' review first published in 1936. António Aurélio Gonçalves
António Aurélio Gonçalves, better known as Nhô Roque (25 September 1901 – 30 September 1984), was a Cape Verdean writer, critic, historian and professor. Life Gonçalves was born in the city of Mindelo, capital of the island of São Vicente. He was the son of Roque da Silva Gonçalves. He was absent from the island for 22 years after he headed to the imperial capital of Lisbon in 1917 after his high-school studies at the seminary on the island of São Nicolau. He attended the University of Lisbon where he studied medicine for two years. Later, he studied Fine Arts, history and philosophy. In 1938, he published a dissertation on irony in the work by Eça de Queiroz. He returned to his native island in early 1939. Baltasar Lopes da Silva ( Caleijão, São Nicolau, 23 April 1907 - Lisbon, Portugal, 28 May 1989) was a writer, poet and linguist from Cape Verde, who wrote in both Portuguese and Cape Verdean Creole. José Gabriel Lopes da Silva, also known as Gabriel Mariano (May 18, 1928 in Ribeira Grande – February 18, 2002 in Lisbon, Portugal), was a Cape Verdean poet, novelist, and an essayist. He studied at São Joaquim and graduated as director in Lisbon.
