Joseph Reed (March 1723 – 15 August 1787) was an English playwright and poet known for his 1761 farce ''The Register Office'' and the 1769 comic opera adaptation of Henry Fielding's ''Tom Jones''. Childhood and early career Reed was born at Stockton, Durham, in March 1723, the second son of John Reed, a presbyterian ropemaker. After a very scanty education he succeeded to his father's business, which he practised with success through life. His leisure he devoted to a study of English literature, and he developed literary aspirations; but he always regarded himself as an amateur, and, when he began to publish, often described himself on his title-pages as "a halter-maker." In August 1744 there appeared in the '' Gentleman's Magazine'' a poem by Reed, "in imitation of the Scottish dialect, on the death of Mr. Pope." Joseph Reed (politician)
Joseph Reed (August 27, 1741March 5, 1785) was a Founding Father of the United States and a lawyer, military officer, and statesman of the American Revolutionary Era who lived the majority of his life in Pennsylvania. He served as a delegate to the Continental Congress and, while in Congress, signed the Articles of Confederation. He also served as President of Pennsylvania's Supreme Executive Council, during the American Revolutionary War, a position analogous to the modern office of Governor. Early life Reed was born in Trenton in the Province of New Jersey in 1741, the son of Andrew Reed, a shopkeeper and merchant, and Theodosia Bowes. His grandfather, Joseph Reed (1650–1727), was born in Carrickfergus, County Antrim in Ulster and settled in West Jersey. His brother, Bowes Reed (1740–1794), would serve as a colonel in the Revolutionary War and as Secretary of State of New Jersey. Joseph Reed (lawyer)
Joseph Reed (July 11, 1771 – March 4, 1846) was a Pennsylvania lawyer and legal writer, who served briefly as the state Attorney General. Biography and career Reed was born the son of Pennsylvania lawyer Joseph Reed and Esther de Berdt. Shortly after Reed's birth, the elder Reed gave up his law practice and became closely involved with George Washington and the American Revolutionary War, served a term as Pennsylvania's president, and was a delegate to the first Continental Congress. He died a few years after the war ended. Reed was then raised in the home of Jared Ingersoll. He graduated from the College of New Jersey in 1792 and was admitted to the bar the same year. In 1805, he married Maria Ellis Watmough (or Watmaugh), they had four children. Two sons, Henry Hope and William Bradford would become lawyers. Joseph Reed (c. 1823–1890), a Cornishman by birth, was a prolific and influential Victorian era architect in Melbourne, Australia. He established his practice in 1853, which through various partnerships and name changes, continues today as Bates Smart, one of the oldest firms continually operating in Australia. Biography Born in 1823 in Cornwall, England, Joseph Reed's early career may have included some local training, and he is known to have worked in the offices of some noted architects in London. He decided to start a new career at the age of 30 in Australia, arriving in Melbourne in 1853, and very soon made a name for himself.
