Joseph M. Proskauer
Joseph Meyer Proskauer (6 August 1877 – 10 September 1971) was an American lawyer, judge, philanthropist, and political activist and is the name partner of Proskauer Rose. Biography Proskauer was born in Mobile, Alabama, to a Jewish family in 1877. His parents were Alfred and Rebecca Proskauer. At 15, he came to Manhattan, New York City, to attend Columbia University and earned an A.B. from Columbia Law School in 1896 and an LL.B in 1899. He was admitted to the bar that same year. He was later awarded honorary degrees from Hebrew Union College, Dartmouth College, Brandeis University, New York University, and Fordham University. Proskauer married Alice Naumburg on October 14, 1903, and they had three children: Frances, Ruth, and Richard. After being admitted to the bar, Proskauer and a friend formed a law firm, which in 1902 merged with James, Schell & Elkus to create a firm that later became Elkus, Gleason & Proskauer. New York Supreme Court
The Supreme Court of the State of New York is the trial-level court of general jurisdiction in the New York State Unified Court System. (Its Appellate Division is also the highest intermediate appellate court.) It is vested with unlimited civil and criminal jurisdiction, although in many counties outside New York City it acts primarily as a court of civil jurisdiction, with most criminal matters handled in County Court. The court is radically different from its counterparts in nearly all other states in that the Supreme Court is a trial court and is not the highest court in the state. The highest court of the State of New York is the Court of Appeals. Al Smith, former governor of New York and the 1928 Democratic presidential nominee, ran an unsuccessful campaign for the party's 1932 presidential nomination. He ultimately lost to Franklin Delano Roosevelt, his one-time political ally (and gubernatorial successor), who would go on to win the general election. Background Al Smith's 1932 presidential campaign was his fourth consecutive bid for the presidency. Smith had unsuccessfully campaigned for the Democratic nomination in both 1920 and 1924. Smith secured the nomination in 1928, however he lost the general election to Republican-nominee Herbert Hoover. After receiving the Democratic nomination in 1928, Smith was prohibited by New York law from running for reelection in the 1928 gubernatorial election. Al Smith, Governor of New York, was a candidate for President of the United States in the 1928 election. His run was notable in that he was the first Catholic nominee of a major party, he opposed Prohibition, and he enjoyed broad appeal among women, who had won the right of suffrage in 1920. Background Al Smith was the governor of New York from 1919 to 1920 and 1923 to 1928. His running mate, Joseph Taylor Robinson, was a senator from Arkansas and future Senate Majority Leader. After failing to secure the nomination at the 1924 Democratic National Convention, which featured a 103-ballot deadlock between Smith and William McAdoo, Smith ran again for the presidency in 1928. Al Smith, Governor of New York, was a candidate for Democratic nomination for President of the United States in the 1924 election. Background Smith had previously made a quixotic bid for the Democratic nomination at the 1920 Democratic National Convention, where his nomination received an invigorating seconding speech by Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who also served as Smith's floor manager at the 1920 convention. Roosevelt, who had campaigned for Smith's gubernatorial campaign in 1918, was chosen by the New York Democratic Party to second Smith's 1920 bid for the nomination. The Anglo-American Committee of Inquiry was a joint British and American committee assembled in Washington, D.C. on 4 January 1946. The committee was tasked to examine political, economic and social conditions in Mandatory Palestine and the well-being of the peoples now living there; to consult representatives of Arabs and Jews, and to make other recommendations 'as may be necessary' to for ad interim handling of these problems as well as for their permanent solution. 92nd Street Y, New York (92NY) is a cultural and community center located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York City, at the corner of East 92nd Street and Lexington Avenue.
