Joseph Arthur Vigneron
Joseph Arthur Vigneron (b. Mirecourt, 1851; d. Paris, 1905) was an important French Archetier / Bowmaker. He served his apprenticeship with his stepfather Charles Claude Husson in Mirecourt, where he studied side by side with Joseph Alfred Lamy père (father of the Lamy family of bow makers), who was less than a year older than he was. Vigneron worked with Husson until the latter's death in 1872, then he moved to the shop of Jean Joseph Martin. He worked for Gand & Bernardel Frères from 1880. By 1888 he opened his own workshop at 54 Rue de Cléry, Paris (not far away from his colleague Joseph Alfred Lamy père). His bows were quite solid and followed his own individual style. Archetier
A bow maker is a person who builds, repairs, and restores ancient or modern bows for bowed string instruments. These include violins, violas, cellos, double basses, viola d'amore, viola da gamba, etc. The French word for bowmaker (bow maker) is archetier for one who makes bows of the string family of instruments such as violin, viola, cello and double bass. Root of the word comes from ''archet''—pronounced —the bow. A bow maker typically uses between 150 and 200 hairs from the tail of a horse for a violin bow. Bows for other members of the violin family typically have a wider ribbon, using more hairs. White hair generally produces a smoother sound and black hair (used mainly for double bass bows) is coarser, producing a rougher sound. Lower quality (inexpensive) bows often use nylon or synthetic hair. Charles Claude Husson
Charles Claude Husson (1847 in Mirecourt, Vosges – 1915) was an influential French archetier ( bow maker). Charles Claude Husson was the son of the archetier Charles Claude Nicolas Husson. He served his apprenticeship under his father, almost at the same time as Joseph Arthur Vigneron. In 1873, he entered Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume's workshop and stayed with him until Vuillaume's death in 1875. Mirecourt
Mirecourt () is a commune in the Vosges department in Grand Est in northeastern France. Mirecourt is known for lace-making and the manufacture of musical instruments, particularly those of the Violin family. Inhabitants are called Mirecurtiens. Joseph Alfred Lamy
Joseph Alfred Lamy (père) (8 September 1850 – 1919), was an important French archetier ( bow maker) of the early twentieth century known as Lamy Père. He was born in Mirecourt, Vosges, France, where he apprenticed from 1862 to 1868, and later worked from 1877 to 1885 for François Nicolas Voirin in Paris. He started his apprenticeship in 1862 with Charles Claude Nicolas Husson. In 1868, he joined Gautrot's workshop in Château Thierry, where he met François Nicolas Voirin. In 1876, he came to Paris to work with François Nicolas Voirin, whose assistant he had become. In 1885, at the death of François Nicolas Voirin, he started his own workshop at 34 rue du Faubourg Poissonière. Jean Joseph Martin
Jean Joseph Martin (b. Mirecourt (Vosges) 1837 – d. Paris 1910) was a French Archetier / Bowmaker. Served his apprenticeship with Nicolas Remy Maire. In 1858 left Mirecourt for Paris to join Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume's workshop. Five years later, JJ MARTIN came back to Mirecourt (1863) to open his own workshop. He also worked with Jerome_Thibouville-Lamy, Jérôme THIBOUVILLE LAMY as they asked for his collaboration to build up their bow production. For a brief time, Martin also worked as director for another workshop in Mirecourt by Emile MENNESSON, with the "Sainte Cécile" insignia. From that period one can find bows stamped J. Guarini. Lucien Capet
Lucien Louis Capet (8 January 1873 – 18 December 1928) was a French violinist, pedagogue and composer. Career Capet came from the Paris proletariat. By the age of fifteen, he had to maintain himself by playing in bistros and cafes. He studied at the Conservatoire de Paris where he was a pupil of Jean-Pierre Maurin and later appeared as soloist with French orchestras. Between 1896 and 1899, he was the concertmaster of the orchestra of the Concerts Lamoureux. He also taught violin at the Société Sainte-Cécile de Bordeaux (1899–1903). His notable students include Jascha Brodsky and Ivan Galamian, both of whom became influential violin teachers of the latter part of the twentieth century. François Nicolas Voirin
François Nicolas Voirin (1833–1885) was a French archetier ( bowmaker), known in his time as the "Modern Tourte." F.N. Voirin (the son of a gardener) was born in Paris France, the brother of Joseph Voirin (also a talented bowmaker) and cousin to Jean Baptiste Vuillaume. At age of 12, he served his apprenticeship in Mirecourt, with Jean SIMON, brother of Nicolas SIMON, also known as SIMON FR, and later worked in the workshop of Vuillaume from 1855 to 1870 where he succeeded Nicolas Maline and revolutionized bow design and construction. The ''Universal Dictionary of Violin & Bow Makers'' is a widely cited reference work providing information on approximately 9,000 violin makers. The work is based on the extensive notes of violinist and composer William Henley (1874-1957). Henley had in his youth studied with August Wilhelmj, and later became a professor of composition and principal of the violin at the Royal Academy in London. Having played violins from many manufacturers, Henley sought to compile a comprehensive list evaluating violin and bow makers. After Henley's death in 1957, dealer Cyril Woodcock (1897–1980) completed and published the work based on Henley's unfinished notes.
