Hoorn
Hoorn () is a city and municipality in the northwest of the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland. It is the largest town and the traditional capital of the region of West Friesland. Hoorn is located on the Markermeer, 20 kilometers (12 mi) east of Alkmaar and 35 kilometers (22 mi) north of Amsterdam. The municipality has just over 73,000 inhabitants and a land area of , making it the third most densely populated municipality in North Holland after Haarlem and Amsterdam. A Dutch documentary film is a documentary film made by a director of (partly) Dutch origin. Dutch documentary films are not necessarily bound to Dutch topics or locations in the Netherlands. History Before 1945 The first known Dutch documentary was made in 1916 by Johann Vierboom. The film ''Storm en noodweer in Nederland'' shows the 1916 flood disaster at the coasts of the Zuiderzee. Another documentary film of this era is ''Holland Neutraal: De leger- en vlootfilm'' (1917) by Willy Mullens. One of the most famous Dutch documentary film directors is Joris Ivens. Ivens started making his own films in 1928. The first was an avant-garde look at a Rotterdam bridge, ''The Bridge'' (''De brug'', 1928). His later films were more realistic, socially concerned and polemical. ''The Spanish Earth'' (1937) is one of his most famous films. Hillie Molenaar
Hillie Molenaar (born 22 May 1945, Sneek) is a Dutch documentary film director. She left school at 15 and worked as a cleaner, waitress, and bookkeeper before finding her niche as a documentary filmmaker in 1974 when, at the age of 29, she made her first film ''Protest Garden''. She was assistant to the legendary Joris Ivens before she formed Molenwiek Film with Joop van Wijk in 1978. Jointly they have produced and directed a dozen award winning documentaries and short films including ''The Factory'' (1979) and ''The Daily Nation'' (2000). They also produced ''Xime'' (Guinea-Bissau, 1994) directed by Sana Na N’Hada, which was an official selection at Cannes Film Festival in Un Certain Regard. She has since formed her own production company HM Films, and teaches with the Zelig School for Documentary, Television and New Media.
