Michigan's 34th Senate District
Michigan's 34th Senate district is one of 38 districts in the Michigan Senate. The 34th district was created in 1953, as dictated by the 1908 Michigan Constitution. The previous 1850 constitution only allowed for 32 senate districts. It has been represented by Republican Jon Bumstead since 2019, succeeding fellow Republican Goeff Hansen. Geography District 34 encompasses all of Clare, Gladwin, Gratiot, Isabella, Mecosta, and Osceola counties, as well as parts of Bay, Clinton, Lake, Midland, and Saginaw counties. 2011 Apportionment Plan District 34, as dictated by the 2011 Apportionment Plan, was based in Muskegon, covered all of Muskegon County as well as nearby Newaygo and Oceana Counties. Michigan Senate
The Michigan Senate is the upper house of the Michigan Legislature. Along with the Michigan House of Representatives, it composes the state legislature, which has powers, roles and duties defined by Article IV of the Michigan Constitution, adopted in 1963. The primary purpose of the Legislature is to enact new laws and amend or repeal existing laws. The Michigan Senate is composed of 38 members, each elected from a single-member district with a population of between approximately 212,400 to 263,500 residents. Legislative districts are drawn on the basis of population figures, provided by the federal decennial census. Senators' terms begin immediately upon their election. Republicans hold the majority in the State Senate with twenty-two seats; Democrats hold the minority with sixteen seats. Michigan's 32nd Senate district is one of 38 districts in the Michigan Senate. The 32nd district was created by the 1850 Michigan Constitution, as the 1835 constitution only permitted a maximum of eight senate districts. It has been represented by Republican Jon Bumstead since 2023, succeeding fellow Republican Kenneth Horn. Fremont, Michigan
Fremont is a city in Newaygo County, Michigan, United States. The population was 4,516 at the time of the 2020 census. History The first inhabitants of the Fremont area were Native Americans. A group of settlers led by Daniel Weaver first settled the area in 1855, the Weaver homestead serving as the first post office and public school. In November 1855, Fremont Township was established and named in honor of John C. Fremont, western explorer and Republican Party candidate for United States President. Weaver and his fellow settlers cleared the dense timber in order to farm. Early in the 1870s, Dutch immigrant families came from Holland and Muskegon, Michigan; and Fremont continues to recognize its early Dutch heritage in local festivals and pageants.
