Johnson, Hurley And Martin Ltd
Johnson, Hurley and Martin Ltd were based at the Alpha Works in Gosford Street, Coventry, England and made engines for several car manufacturers as well as the engines for the Weaver Aircraft, which was the first monoplane to fly in England in May, 1910. They continued in various forms of engine production until c1927, with the contents of the Alpha Works being sold off by the Receiver in February 1928. Company History The company was formed by George Thompson, Daniel Henry Hurley and James Richard Martin who had worked as partnership from about 1901 and formed the company in 1903. Daniel Henry Hurley was previously one of the partners of the Forman Motor Manufacturing Co of Paynes Lane, Coventry, who manufactured car engines from about 1901. Calthorpe Cars
The Calthorpe Motor Company based in Bordesley Green, Birmingham, England made a range of cars, motorcycles and bicycles from 1904 to 1932. Formation The company had its origins in the 1890s as a Birmingham bicycle maker called Hands and Cake run by George W. Hands. This was renamed the Bard Cycle Manufacturing Company in 1897 changing to the Minstrel Cycle Company in 1901. The Minstrel Cycle Company evolved into the Minstrel and Rea Cycle Company, and it appears the Calthorpe Motor Co Ltd was created at about that time. It was reported that the two companies were operating out of the same premises in Barn Street, Birmingham when a serious fire occurred in June 1905. Coventry Victor
Coventry Victor was a British motorcycle and car manufacturer. Originally Morton & Weaver, a proprietary engine manufacturer in Hillfields, Coventry, founded in 1904, the company changed its name to Coventry Victor Motors in 1911. The company closed in 1971. Morton & Weaver Thomas Morton and William Arthur Weaver formed Morton & Weaver Limited in Coventry in 1904 as engineers and toolmakers. In 1911 they formed a new company, the Coventry Victor Motor Company, to continue their interest in motor engineering while the original company continued as tool makers. Coventry Victor aero engines Weaver was a pioneer in designing and building aircraft, and by 1905 Weaver was designing and building his first ornithoplane (monoplane) utilising a nine-horsepower engine built by Johnson, Hurley and Martin Ltd.
