Johnny Lloyd
John Peregrine Francis Lloyd (24 August 1907 - 19 December 1985) also known as Johnny Lloyd and Jack Lloyd was a motorcycle speedway rider who rode in the earliest days of the sport in Britain. Speedway career Lloyd is significant in the fact that he finished top of the league averages during the inaugural season of speedway in Great Britain. His average was 10.80 in the 1929 Speedway Southern League The 1929 Southern League was the inaugural season of speedway in the United Kingdom for Southern British teams. Birmingham Bulldogs (speedway)
Birmingham Bulldogs also known as the Hall Green Bulldogs are a defunct British motorcycle speedway team who operated between 1929 and 1938 and were based at Hall Green Stadium, York Road, Hall Green in Birmingham, England. History Under the name Hall Green they entered the inaugural Southern League but withdrew during the 1929 Speedway Southern League and had their record expunged. The following season as the Hall Green Bulldogs they competed in the 1930 Speedway Southern League finishing fifth. The Bulldogs (now known as the Birmingham Bulldogs) rejoined the league for the 1934 Speedway National League finishing seventh. The club returned to league action during the 1937 Provincial Speedway League finishing 6th and only raced one more year afterwards in the 1938 Speedway National League Division Two. Birmingham Brummies
Birmingham Brummies are a British speedway team founded in 1928. They were inaugural members of the Southern League in 1929. The team have twice finished runner-up in the highest tier of British speedway, during the 1952 Speedway National League and 2013 Elite League speedway season. After four years in the National League, in 2019 they moved up to the second tier of British speedway in the SGB Championship. History 1928–1986 Birmingham had two teams in the Southern League of the inaugural season of British speedway in 1929. One was based at Perry Barr Stadium and the other was based at Hall Green Stadium. The Hall Green team, known during their time as Birmingham Bulldogs, closed in 1938. Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Racing takes place on a flat oval track usually consisting of dirt, loosely packed shale, or crushed rock (mostly used in Australia and New Zealand). The British Newspaper Archive web site provides access to searchable digitized archives of British and Irish newspapers. It was launched in November 2011. History The British Library Newspapers section was based in Colindale in north London, until 2013, and is now divided between the St Pancras and Boston Spa sites. The library has an almost complete collection of British and Irish newspapers since 1840.
