Johnny (1999 Film)
''Johnny'' is a 1999 Canadian drama film, written, produced, and directed by Carl Bessai.Gerald Pratley, ''A Century of Canadian Cinema''. Lynx Images, 2003. . p. 113. Inspired by the Dogme 95 movement, the film stars Chris William Martin, Chris Martin as Johnny, a young man who is making a film about squeegee kids around Toronto, but begins to manipulate them into performing increasingly dangerous stunts. The cast also includes Gema Zamprogna, Kris Lemche, Vanessa Shaver, Clinton Walker, Rainbow Sun Francks, Kyra Harper, Hrothgar Mathews, Sabrina Grdevich and Hugh Dillon. The film was inspired by Bessai's prior work on a documentary about street kids, during which he found that many of them had difficulty expressing themselves until he gave them video cameras and asked them to film something that represented their own first-person views of their lives. Carl Bessai
Carl Bessai (born 1966 in Edmonton, Alberta) is a Canadian film director and screenwriter. Bessai studied at OCAD University and at York University in Toronto graduating with a Master of Fine Arts Degree. He got his start directing documentary films before moving to Vancouver and directing his debut feature film ''Johnny'' in 1999. ''Set Me Free'' (french: Emporte-moi) is a 1999 Canadian coming-of-age drama film by Léa Pool and starring Karine Vanasse. It tells the story of Hanna, a girl struggling with her sexuality and the depression of both her parents as she goes through puberty in Quebec in 1963. The film heavily references the French new-wave film ''Vivre sa vie'' by Jean-Luc Godard. The film won critical acclaim and several awards, both for Pool and Vanasse, including being named the year's best Canadian feature by the Toronto Film Critics Association. Karine Vanasse (born 24 November 1983) is a French-Canadian actress, who had roles in the films '' Polytechnique'', '' Séraphin: Heart of Stone (Séraphin: un homme et son péché)'', ''Switch'' and '' Set Me Free (Emporte-moi)''. Internationally she is best known for her roles as Colette Valois in ''Pan Am'', Margaux LeMarchal in ''Revenge'' and Lise Delorme in ''Cardinal''. Life and career Vanasse was born in Drummondville, Quebec, the daughter of Conrad Vanasse, a council worker, and Renée (née Gamache), who was her manager at the beginning of her career.
