John Wishart (bishop)
John Wishart (died 1338) was a 14th-century bishop of Glasgow. He was archdeacon of Glasgow from 1321 or earlier. After the death of Bishop John de Lindesay in 1335, John was elected to succeed him at Glasgow, and was consecrated in February 1337 at the orders of Pope Benedict XII at Avignon by Annibald de Ceccano, bishop of Tusculum. His episcopate was extremely brief. John Wishart Of Pitarrow
Sir John Wishart of Pitarrow (died 1576) was a Scottish lawyer, courtier, comptroller of the exchequer, and rebel. Career He was the eldest son of James Wishart of Cairnbeg in the parish of Fordoun in Aberdeenshire. His grandfather, James Wishart of Pittarrow had been clerk of the justiciary court and king's advocate. John succeeded his uncle, John Wishart, in the lands and barony of Pittarrow in 1545. Pittarrow is also often spelled "Pitarro". On 14 March 1557 he joined Archibald Campbell, 4th Earl of Argyll, Alexander Cunningham, 5th Earl of Glencairn, the Lord James Stewart, and John Erskine of Dun, in signing a letter to John Knox, who was then at Geneva, inviting him to return to Scotland. During the next few years Wishart continued one of the leading members of the Protestant party in Scotland. On 24 May 1559 they met at Perth to organise resistance to the queen regent Mary of Guise. John Wishart (surgeon)
John Wishart (May 27, 1850 – November 6, 1926) was a Canadian surgeon and pioneer medical educator. Wishart was the first professor of surgery at the University of Western Ontario. He was a pioneer surgical educator in Canada prior to the Flexner Report. Some of his lectures are preserved as student notes by the library at the University of Western Ontario. His resignation after 27 years as Professor of Clinical Surgery may have been due to Flexner's negative comments about the school. Wishart was a founding fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Wishart was educated at the University of Toronto at the same time as William Osler. As a young surgeon in 1874, he assisted Abraham Groves in one of the first operations to use modern aseptic technique. In 1886, he performed an appendectomy becoming an early practitioner of that surgery. John Wishart (statistician)
John Wishart (28 November 1898 – 14 July 1956) was a Scottish mathematician and agricultural statistician. He gave his name to the Wishart distribution in statistics. Life Wishart was born in Perth, Scotland on 28 November 1898, the son of Elizabeth and John Wishart of Montrose. His father was a bootmaker. The family moved from Montrose to Perth around 1903, living at 36 Robertsons Buildings on Barrack Street. He was educated at Perth Academy. In the First World War he was conscripted into the Black Watch in 1917 and served two years in France. He studied Mathematics at Edinburgh University under Edmund Taylor Whittaker, graduating MA BSc before winning a place at Cambridge University where he gained a further MA. He then gained a doctorate (DSc) at the University College London under Karl Pearson. After a year of teacher training at Moray College of Education in Edinburgh he then worked for some years as a Mathematics Teacher at West Leeds High School. In 1927 he join ...
