John Evans (Australian Politician)
Sir John William Evans, CMG (1 December 1855 – 2 October 1943) was an Australian politician, a member of the Tasmanian House of Assembly and Premier of Tasmania from 11 July 1904 to 19 June 1909. Early life and nautical career Evans was born in 1855 in Liverpool, England, but migrated with his family to Battery Point, Tasmania when he was four years old. After education in Hobart, Evans embarked on a year-long voyage through Asian ports with his parents. His father, a merchant seaman, arranged an apprenticeship for him on his part-owned barque, ''Helen'', trading to China and Japan.W. A. John William Evans (geologist)
John William Evans CBE (27 July 1857 – 16 November 1930) was a British geologist. He was born the son of Evan Evans in London and educated at University College School and University College. He was called to the bar in 1878 and worked for a while as a barrister. Around 1892 he studied at the Royal College of Science and was awarded D.Sc. after which he spent several years in India as a geologist, retiring in 1905. From 1911 he took up a new career as a lecturer and researcher at Imperial College of Science and Technology. Evans was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1919. At that time he was Lecturer in Petrology at Imperial College and Professional Adviser to the Colonial Office on minerals other than petroleum and coal. He was president of the Geologists' Association for 1912–14 and president of Geological Society of London for 1924–26. He received the Murchison Medal of the Geological Society in 1922. John William Evans (Welsh Politician)
John William Evans (1870-1906) was a Liberal politician and public figure in Aberdare, South Wales. Evans was born in Hirwaun in 1870. His father Evan J. Evans, was a prosperous business man in Hirwaun, and a deacon at Tabernacle Congregational Chapel, and one of the founders of the church. He was educated locally and at St. Andrew's College, Swansea, and the Independent College, Taunton. He entered the legal profession, and was articled to Mr. Coe, of Cardiff, before setting up a successful practice at Aberdare. He was married with one son. Public life When only 21 years of age, Evans was selected a member of the Merthyr Board of Guardians. It was said that he was at the time the youngest guardian in the United Kingdom. John William Evans (entomologist)
John William Evans (16 January 1906 – 1990) was a British entomologist who worked as an entomology in Australia and served as director of the Australian Museum from 1954 to 1966. He was a specialist on the Hemiptera, especially the leafhoppers, and took an interest in aspects of biogeography and evolution. Evans was born in India and went to Jesus College, Cambridge to study geology, botany and zoology, graduating in 1926. He then moved to Australia to study sharks and then joined the newly created CSIR (now called the CSIRO). He studied '' Cactoblastus'' on prickly pear. He then worked at the Cawthron Institute in New Zealand. He married Faith, the second daughter of the director, entomologist R.J. Tillyard.
