John Wallace De Beque Farris
John Wallace de Beque Farris, (December 3, 1878 – February 25, 1970) was a Canadian lawyer and politician. Born in White's Cove, New Brunswick, the son of Laughlin P. Farris and Louise Hay, he was educated at St. Martin's Seminary, received his Bachelor of Arts from Acadia University and received his Bachelor of Law from the University of Pennsylvania. In 1905, Farris married Evlyn Fenwick Keirstead of Windsor, Nova Scotia. They had four children : Katherine Hay, Donald Fenwick, Ralph Keirstead and John Lauchlan. He was called to the British Columbia Bar in 1903. He founded the law firm now called Farris LLP and was the first prosecutor of Vancouver, British Columbia. In 1907, he ran unsuccessfully for the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia for the riding of Vancouver. He lost again in 1909 for the riding of Richmond. The Senate of Canada (french: region=CA, Sénat du Canada) is the upper house of the Parliament of Canada. Together with the Crown and the House of Commons, they comprise the bicameral legislature of Canada. ''Kuzych v White'' was a series of Canadian labour law decisions from British Columbia, dealing with a membership dispute between a trade union and a member of the union. Myron Kuzych, the union member, publicly objected to the closed shop favoured by the Boilermakers and Iron Ship Builders Union of Canada (BISU). The union cancelled his membership, resulting in him being fired by the shipyard where he worked as a welder. Kuzych challenged the termination in the British Columbia courts, and eventually the matter was decided by the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in Britain, at that time the highest court of appeal in the British Commonwealth. The Judicial Committee ruled that Kuzych should have exhausted his appeals within the union before going to court, and upheld his expulsion from the union. Nathaniel Theodore (Nathan) Nemetz, (September 8, 1913 – October 21, 1997) was a Canadian lawyer and judge. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, he moved with his family to Vancouver when he was 10. He received a BA from the University of British Columbia in 1934 and was called to the British Columbia Bar in 1937. In 1951, along with Senator John W. de B. Farris, KC, Nemetz was the successful counsel in an appeal to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council: '' White v Kuzych'', a significant labour law case. 1920 British Columbia General Election
The 1920 British Columbia general election was the fifteenth general election for the Province of British Columbia, Canada. It was held to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. The election was called on October 23, 1920, and held on December 1, 1920. The new legislature met for the first time on February 8, 1921. Although it lost eleven seats in the legislature, and fell from 50% of the popular vote to under 38%, the governing Liberal Party was able to hold on to a slim majority in the legislature for its second consecutive term in government. The Conservative Party also lost a significant share of its popular vote, but won six additional seats for a total of fifteen, and formed the Official Opposition. 1916 British Columbia General Election
The 1916 British Columbia general election was the fourteenth general election for the Province of British Columbia, Canada. It was held to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. The election was called on July 5, 1916, and held on September 14, 1916. The new legislature met for the first time on March 1, 1917. The Liberal Party defeated the governing Conservative Party, winning 50% of the vote, almost double its share from the previous election. The Liberals won 36 of the 47 seats in the legislature. The Conservatives' popular vote fell from almost 60% to just over 40%, and took nine seats, forming the Official Opposition. Two other seats were won by independents. Unlike in the previous BC general election, in 1916 of the 47 MLAs 37 were elected in single member districts. Richmond (British Columbia Provincial Electoral District)
Richmond was a provincial electoral district in the Canadian province of British Columbia. It made its first appearance on the hustings in the election of 1903.
