John Thompson (Liberal Politician)
John William Howard Thompson (1861-17 October 1959) was a British Liberal Party politician, solicitor and soldier. Background He was educated at Carshalton and Whitgift School, Croydon. He married Antoinette Ebden Keene of Crewkerne, Somerset. They had two daughters. His wife died in 1940. His daughter Antoinette Winifred Thompson married the 6th Marquess Conyngham. Career He worked as a solicitor. He was Liberal MP for Somerset East from 1906 to 1910. He gained the seat at the 1906 General Election from the Liberal Unionists. He served just one parliamentary term before losing his seat back to the Liberal Unionists at the General Election in January 1910. He stood again at the General Election of December 1910 but was unable to regain his seat. Captain (armed Forces)
The army rank of captain (from the French ) is a commissioned officer rank historically corresponding to the command of a company of soldiers. The rank is also used by some air forces and marine forces. Today, a captain is typically either the commander or second-in-command of a company or artillery battery (or United States Army cavalry troop or Commonwealth squadron). In the Chinese People's Liberation Army, a captain may also command a company, or be the second-in-command of a battalion. Henry Hobhouse (East Somerset MP)
Henry Hobhouse (1 March 1854 – 25 June 1937) was an English landowner and Liberal, and from 1886 Liberal Unionist politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1885 to 1906. Hobhouse was the son of Henry Hobhouse, of Hadspen House, Somerset, and his wife, the Hon. Charlotte Etruria Talbot, daughter of James Talbot, 3rd Baron Talbot of Malahide. He had several siblings, including Emily Hobhouse. After his father's death in 1862 his uncle Arthur Hobhouse became his guardian. He was educated at Eton and Balliol College, Oxford, and was called to the Bar at Lincoln's Inn. He practised as a parliamentary draughtsman and was a J.P. for Somerset. In the 1885 general election, Hobhouse was elected MP for East Somerset. He held the seat until 1906. Hobhouse was particularly concerned with education. Anthony Muirhead
Lieutenant-Colonel Anthony John Muirhead MC & Bar TD (4 November 1890 – 29 October 1939) was a Conservative Party politician in the United Kingdom. He was elected at the 1929 general election as Member of Parliament (MP) for Wells in Somerset, and held the seat until his death in 1939, aged 48. Earlier military career Muirhead served in the Queen's Own Oxfordshire Hussars in the First World War, reaching the rank of captain, being awarded the Military Cross in 1917 and a Bar while serving as brigade major of the 119th Infantry Brigade at Armentières in the closing days of the war in 1918. He was promoted to brevet major in 1919. In 1924 he transferred to the 100th (Worcestershire and Oxfordshire Yeomanry) Field Brigade, Royal Field Artillery ( Territorial Army) and was granted the full rank of major. Wells (UK Parliament Constituency)
Wells is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2015 by James Heappey of the Conservative Party. History The original two-member borough constituency was created in 1295, and abolished by the Reform Act 1867 with effect from the 1868 general election. Joseph King (MP)
Joseph King (31 March 1860 – 25 August 1943), was a British Liberal Party politician who later joined the Labour Party. Background He was the eldest son of Joseph King of Liverpool and his wife Phoebe (née Powell). He was educated at Uppingham School, Trinity College, Oxford, (where he was awarded a BA in 1883 and an MA in 1886) Airedale College, Bradford, University of Giessen and University, Berlin. He married, in 1887, Maude Egerton. They had one daughter. He was called to the bar at the Inner Temple in 1889. Maude died in 1927. He married for a second time in 1928, to Helena G. Martins.
