John Torrence Tate Jr. (March 13, 1925 – October 16, 2019) was an American mathematician, distinguished for many fundamental contributions in algebraic number theory, arithmetic geometry and related areas in algebraic geometry. He was awarded the Abel Prize in 2010. Biography Tate was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His father, John Tate Sr., was a professor of physics at the University of Minnesota, and a longtime editor of ''Physical Review''. His mother, Lois Beatrice Fossler, was a high school English teacher. Tate Jr. received his bachelor's degree in mathematics in 1946 from Harvard University, and entered the doctoral program in physics at Princeton University. John Tate (Australian Politician)
John Percival Tate (21 March 1894 – 21 January 1977) was an Australian architect, urban planner and politician. He was born in New Zealand where he trained as an architect and engineer. He moved to Sydney as a young man and went into private practice, later working for the federal government during World War II. Tate served on the Ryde Municipal Council and Sydney City Council in the 1940s and 1950s. As chairman of the Cumberland City Council he was a key figure behind the Cumberland Plan for Greater Sydney. He also served as a Senator for New South Wales from 1950 to 1953, representing the Liberal Party. Early life Tate was born on 21 March 1894 in Wellington, New Zealand. John Tate is a former councillor and Lord Mayor of the City of Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia. Tate was originally elected as a councillor of the City of Newcastle in September 1980, and was elected Lord Mayor in 1999, continuing in that role until 2012. Tate ran as an independent candidate for the electoral district of Newcastle in the 2007 state election but narrowly lost to Labor candidate Jodi McKay, a former NBN Television reporter. Tate re-contested the Lord Mayoral position at the September 2008 New South Wales Local Government Elections as an independent candidate out-polling his rivals with 32% compared to Independent Aaron Buman with 18.6% and Australian Labor Party candidate Marilyn Eade with 18.4%. John Tate (January 29, 1955 – April 9, 1998) was an American professional boxer, and held the WBA heavyweight championship from 1979 to 1980. As an amateur he won a bronze medal in the heavyweight division at the 1976 Summer Olympics. John Tate was the first English papermaker. According to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography he was born about 1448. A businessman based in London, he was a member of the Mercers Company. Early life The Tates were a successful business family with international trading connections. The subject was known to contemporaries as "John Tate the younger", Tate, called "the yonger", is mentioned by Wynkyn de Worde in the colophon to a book he produced in 1496, an encyclopaedia, ''De Proprietatibus Rerum'' by Bartholomeus Anglicus (in John Trevisa's translation). This book has been claimed to be the first printed on English paper. and is believed have been the son of the John Tate who served as Lord Mayor of London in 1473. Sir John Tate (died 1515) was twice Lord Mayor of London and a Member of Parliament. He was born the son of Thomas Tate of Coventry and became a mercer of the City of London, initially apprenticed to his uncle, John Tate, a former (1473) Mayor of London. John Tate junior was made an Alderman of London in 1463, appointed Sheriff of London for 1485 and elected Lord Mayor for 1496-97 and 1514–15.
