John Strong (mariner)
John Strong was an English mariner. During an expedition from London to South America in 1689–91, commanding HMS ''Welfare'', he discovered the sound between the two main islands in the Falkland Islands. He named it Falkland Sound for Anthony Cary, 5th Viscount of Falkland, a part-owner in the ''Welfare''. Anthony partly sponsored his journey. Later, the name Falkland was adopted to the entire archipelago. On 27 January 1690, he made the first recorded landing in the Falkland Islands. The expedition continued through the Strait of Magellan. John Strong Newberry (December 22, 1822 – December 7, 1892) was an American physician, geologist and paleontologist. He participated as a naturalist and surgeon on three expeditions to explore and survey the western United States. During the Civil War he served in the US Sanitary Commission and was appointed secretary of the western department of the commission. After the war he became professor of geology and paleontology at Columbia University School of Mines. Biography John Strong Newberry was born in Windsor, Connecticut to Henry and Elizabeth Strong. At the age of two he moved with his family to northeastern Ohio where his father opened a coal mining business. John Strong (16101699) was an English-born New England colonist, politician, Puritan church leader, tanner and one of the founders of Windsor, Connecticut and Northampton, Massachusetts as well as the progenitor of nearly all the Strong families in what is now the United States. He was referred to as Elder John Strong because he was an Elder in the church. Early life Strong was born in about 1610 in Chard, Somerset, England and emigrated to Massachusetts with his pregnant wife and a one-year-old child in 1635 aboard the sailing ship ''Hopewell''. John Strong is an American television play-by-play broadcaster who is the lead play-by-play voice for '' MLS on Fox''. His work has appeared on NBC, Fox, ESPN among other networks. He is a former radio host on 750-AM "The Game" in Portland, Oregon and was the radio and television play-by-play announcer for the Portland Timbers Major League Soccer team. Strong, the son of John Strong Sr. (1798–1881), from Wroxton, Oxfordshire, England, was a first generation American born in a log cabin in Greenfield Township, Michigan, which is now part of Detroit. John Anderson Strong (18 February 1915 – 15 December 2012) was a Scottish physician/internist and academic, who served as Professor of Medicine at the University of Edinburgh and the President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. Born in Ireland, he was educated at Monkton Combe School in Bath, and then studied medicine at Trinity College, Dublin.
