John Smith's Silver Cup Stakes
The John Smith's Silver Cup Stakes is a Group 3 flat horse race in Great Britain open to horses aged four years or older. It is run at York over a distance of 1 mile 5 furlongs and 188 yards (2,787 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in July. The race was first run in 1985 as the ''Sun Page 3 Stakes'' at Lingfield Park. The following year it had Listed status and was renamed the ''Sun Page 3 Silver Cup''. It was moved to York in 1990 and was run as a handicap race between 1993 and 2015. In 2018 it was upgraded to Group 3 status and restricted to four-year-olds and up as part of the European Pattern Committee's commitment to improving the race programme for stayers in Europe. Group Races
Group races, also known as Pattern races, or Graded races in some jurisdictions, are the highest level of races in Thoroughbred horse racing. They include most of the world's iconic races, such as, in Europe, the Derby, Irish Derby and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, in Australia, the Melbourne Cup and in the United States, the Kentucky Derby and Breeders' Cup races. Paul Cole
Paul F. I. Cole (born 11 September 1941) is a British racehorse trainer. Since 1987 he has been based at Whatcombe Estate in Berkshire, the former stables of Dick Dawson and Arthur Budgett. He was British flat racing Champion Trainer in 1991, the year in which he trained Generous to win the Epsom Derby. Notable owners he has trained for include Prince Fahd bin Salman and Martyn Arbib, and regular jockeys have been Richard Quinn and Alan Munro. In March 2020 Cole took out a joint training licence with his son, Oliver, who had previously been his assistant trainer. Robert Armstrong (racehorse Trainer)
Robert Walter Armstrong (15 January 1944 – 5 February 2021) was a British horse trainer who trained horses competing in flat racing. In a career lasting from 1973 until 2000 he trained the winners of 737 races in Great Britain, including 13 at Group One level. He was the son of Sam Armstrong (1904–1982) and grandson of Bob Armstrong, who were both also racehorse trainers. Robert Armstong's sister, Susan, married the champion jockey Lester Piggott. The best horses he trained were Moorestyle and Never So Bold, both European champion sprinters. Richard Hills (jockey)
Richard Hills (born 22 January 1963) is a retired flat racing jockey. He is twin brother to Michael Hills (also a jockey) and their father is former racehorse trainer Barry Hills. The twins' older brother John Hills was also a trainer. They also have two younger brothers, Charles Hills (who has succeeded their father Barry as a racehorse trainer) and George Hills who works in the Breeding and Insurance side of the industry in Kentucky, United States. Richard enjoys breeding ducks, Persian Cats and plane spotting. Richard Hills rode his first winner, ''Border Dawn'', at Doncaster Racecourse on 26 October 1979. Willie Carson
William Fisher Hunter Carson, OBE (born 16 November 1942) is a retired jockey in thoroughbred horse racing. Life and career Best known as "Willie", Carson was born in Stirling, Scotland in 1942. He was apprenticed to Captain Gerald Armstrong at his stables at Tupgill, North Yorkshire. His first winner in Britain was Pinker's Pond in a seven-furlong apprentice handicap at Catterick Bridge Racecourse on 19 July 1962. He was British Champion Jockey five times (1972, 1973, 1978, 1980 and 1983), won 17 British Classic Races, and passed 100 winners in a season 23 times for a total of 3,828 wins, making him the fourth most successful jockey in Great Britain. Luca Cumani
Luca M. Cumani (born 7 April 1949, in Milan, Italy) is an Italian thoroughbred horse trainer and breeder. He trained at Bedford House Stables in Newmarket from 1976 to 2019. He has trained a multitude of high-profile horses, including seven Classic race winners, two Epsom Derby winners in Kahyasi (1988) and High-Rise (1998), as well as a Breeders' Cup Mile winner in Barathea (1994). Jimmy Fortune (jockey)
James Joseph Fortune (born 14 June 1972) is a retired Irish thoroughbred jockey who in a 30-year career won over 1,800 races, including 16 Group 1s, and 1 British Classic, the 2007 St Leger. Career Fortune was apprenticed to Mike O'Neill and Luca Cumani. He was first licensed in 1987 and his first win came on 29 July 1988 at Thirsk riding Hitchenstown for Eric Alston. It was O'Neill who brought Fortune over to Britain, and his first major victory was on O'Neill's Joveworth at 50/1 in the 1989 Ayr Gold Cup, while still an apprentice, claiming 5lb. In 1990 he became Champion Apprentice with 47 wins. Later, Fortune became jockey for David Barron, then took a retainer with Jack Ramsden after Kieren Fallon left. Anne Elizabeth Cowdrey, 14th Lady Herries of Terregles, Baroness Cowdrey of Tonbridge (''née'' Fitzalan-Howard; 12 June 1938 – 23 November 2014) was a British racehorse trainer and peeress. Early life and family Born Lady Anne Fitzalan-Howard on 12 June 1938, she was the eldest of four daughters of Bernard Fitzalan-Howard, 16th Duke of Norfolk and The Hon. Lavinia Strutt. John Reid (jockey)
John Andrew Reid (born 6 August 1955 in Banbridge County Down, Northern Ireland) is a retired flat race jockey. Reid served as an apprentice in his native Ireland to Leslie Crawford, before moving to England and joining Verley Bewicke. His first Classic victory came in the 1982 1,000 Guineas aboard On The House. His first major Group 1 race win came in the 1978 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot on Ile de Bourbon. Reid won this race for a second time in 1997 on Swain, when the top-class thoroughbreds Helissio, Singspiel and Pilsudski were all beaten off. Ian Balding
Ian Balding (born 7 November 1938) is a retired British horse trainer. He is the son of the polo player and racehorse trainer Gerald Matthews Balding and the younger brother of trainer Toby Balding. Ian Balding was born in the US, but his family returned to the UK in 1945. He was educated at Marlborough College and Millfield school in Somerset. He went up to Christ's College, Cambridge, in 1959 to read Rural Estate Management, where he played Rugby for the university team, gaining his Blue in 1961 at full back. He started training in 1964. Kingsclere became his home at the age of 26 and it is here that earned his reputation as an internationally respected trainer. Lanfranco Dettori (; born 15 December 1970), better known as Frankie Dettori, is an Italian horse racing jockey based in the United Kingdom. Dettori has been British flat racing Champion Jockey three times and has ridden the winners of more than 500 Group races. This includes 20 winners of the English classics.
