John Sherwood (athlete)
John Sherwood (born 4 June 1945 in Selby, West Riding of Yorkshire, England) is a male retired United Kingdom, British athlete. Athletics career Sherwood won the bronze medal in the Olympic Games in Mexico City in 1968 for the 400 m hurdles. His time was 49.03 seconds, and he was third behind fellow British athlete David Hemery, who took gold, and German Gerhard Hennige (silver). The commentator, David Coleman, who in his great excitement after Hemery won, made the rather unfortunate remark "who cares who's third - it doesn't matter!" It was an early example of so-called Colemanballs. Sherwood also won a silver medal in the European Athletics Championships in 1969 and a gold medal in the Commonwealth Games in 1970. He also represented England at the 1974 British Commonwealth Games, England in the 400 metres hurdles event, at the 1966 Commonwealth Games and the 1974 British Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, New Zealand. John Sherwood (or Shirwood; died 1494) was an English churchman and diplomat. Life Sherwood was the son of the common clerk John Shirwod of York and his first wife, Agnes. John Sherwood (chemist)
John Neil Sherwood (c. 1933 – 4 December 2020) was a British physical chemist, who researched organic crystals. He spent his career at the University of Strathclyde, where he was professor of chemistry (1977–2002), as well as serving as vice-principal (from 1994). Career and research Sherwood was born in Redruth, Cornwall, to Lily (née Rose) and William Sherwood, who taught French. He was educated at Aireborough Grammar School, near Bradford, and from 1951 studied chemistry at the University of Durham, where he gained BSc (1955), PhD (1960) and DSc (1976) degrees. His DSc thesis was entitled "Studies of the solid state". In 1960, he joined the Royal College of Science and Technology in Glasgow – from 1964, part of the University of Strathclyde – where he was lecturer and then professor of chemistry (from 1977). Les Pretend
Lesley Presley Pretend is a fictional character in a comic strip (Les Pretend) in the UK comic ''The Beano'' with the byline "the Little kid with the big imagination". Originally drawn by John Sherwood, he first appeared in issue 2493, dated 28 April 1990. In each issue, Les pretends to be something and dresses up like it, beginning with a martian in his debut. His dad is called Des (and is thus one of the few Beano parents to be given a name rather than 'mum' or 'dad'), an Elvis Presley fan and impersonator, hence Les' middle name of Presley. Recurring features of the strip are the feasibility of Les' (often improvised) costumes, and the readiness with which Des accepts things like the appearance of a giant creature, and attempts to deal with it in a rational and unfazed way. He has been with the Naval History and Heritage Command since 1997.
