Yorkshire (UK Parliament Constituency)
Yorkshire was a constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of England from 1290, then of the Parliament of Great Britain from 1707 to 1800 and of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1801 to 1832. It was represented by two Members of Parliament, traditionally known as Knights of the Shire, until 1826, when the county benefited from the disfranchisement of Grampound by taking an additional two members. The constituency was split into its three historic ridings, for Parliamentary purposes, under the Reform Act 1832. Each riding returned two MPs. The county was then represented by the Yorkshire East Riding, Yorkshire North Riding and Yorkshire West Riding constituencies. Boundaries Yorkshire is the largest of the historic counties of England. John Savile (died 1607)
Sir John Savile (1546–1607) was an English lawyer and judge. Life He was the eldest son of Henry Savile of Bradley, near Stainland, Yorkshire, by his wife Elizabeth, only daughter of Robert Ramsden; Sir Henry Savile and Thomas Savile were younger brothers. He matriculated at Brasenose College, Oxford, in 1561, but did not graduate. To avoid the plague in 1563, he remained in Bradley, where he studied law books on his own. Savile entered the Middle Temple, where he was autumn reader in 1586. In 1572 he was elected member of parliament for Newton, Lancashire. His candidacy has been attributed to friendship with William Fleetwood; another friend and parliamentarian was Henry Gates. Savile practised in the exchequer court, and in 1594 he was made serjeant-at-law. In 1598 he became baron of the exchequer on Lord Burghley's recommendation. John Savile, 1st Baron Savile of Pontefract (1556 – 31 August 1630) was an English politician. He was M.P. for Lincoln (1586), Sheriff of Lincolnshire (1590), knight of the shire for Yorkshire (1597, 1614, 1624 and 1626), ''custos rotulorum'' of West Riding of Yorkshire (ejected from office in 1615 but reappointed in 1626), privy councillor and comptroller of household (1627–1630). He was created Baron Savile in 1627. Early life John Savile was born in 1556, the son of Sir Robert Savile of Barkston, Lincolnshire (d. 1585), by his wife Anne Hussey (d. 1562), sister of John Hussey, 1st Baron Hussey of Sleaford, and widow of Sir Richard Thimelby. His father was the illegitimate son of Sir Henry Savile of Thornhill in the West Riding of Yorkshire and had served as sheriff of Lincolnshire in 1573. John Savile, 1st Earl Of Mexborough
John Savile, 1st Earl of Mexborough (December 1719 – 17 February 1778), known as The Lord Pollington between 1753 and 1766, was a British peer and Member of Parliament. Savile was the eldest son of Charles Savile of Methley (1676–1741). He entered Parliament in 1747 as member for Hedon in East Yorkshire, and subsequently also represented New Shoreham. In 1749 he was appointed a Knight Companion of the Order of the Bath. In November 1753 he was raised to the Peerage of Ireland as Baron Pollington of Longford in the County of Longford whilst remaining an MP. In February 1766 he was created Viscount Pollington of Ferns in the County of Wexford and Earl of Mexborough of Lifford in the County of Donegal, again in the Irish peerage. Mexborough was a friend and patron of the playwright and actor-manager Samuel Foote; it was while on a visit to Mexborough in 1766 that Foote lost a leg in a riding accident. John Savile, 2nd Earl Of Mexborough
John Savile, 2nd Earl of Mexborough (8 April 1761 – 3 February 1830), styled Viscount Pollington between 1766 and 1778, was a British peer and politician. Background Mexborough was the son of John Savile, 1st Earl of Mexborough, and Sarah (née Delaval). Political career Mexborough succeeded his father in the earldom in 1778. However, as this was an Irish peerage it did not entitle him to a seat in the British House of Lords (although it did entitle him to a seat in the Irish House of Lords). In 1808 he was elected to the House of Commons for Lincoln, a seat he retained until 1812. Family Lord Mexborough married Elizabeth, daughter of Henry Stephenson, in 1782. Elizabeth died in 1821 and is buried in the church at Methley with a monument by Robert Blore. John Savile, 3rd Earl of Mexborough (3 July 1783 – 25 December 1860), styled Viscount Pollington until 1830, was a British peer and Tory politician. Origins He was the son of John Savile, 2nd Earl of Mexborough by his wife Elizabeth Stephenson, a daughter of Henry Stephenson. Political career At the 1807 general election, Mexborough was returned as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Pontefract, having unsuccessfully contested the seat in 1806. He was defeated at the 1812 general election, but won the seat back at by-election in December 1812, and held it until he stood down at the 1826 election. He was re-elected in 1831, but did not stand again at the 1832 general election. He succeeded his father in the earldom in 1830. However, as this was an Irish peerage it did not entitle him to a seat in the House of Lords. Sir John Stewart Savill, FRS, FMedSci (born 25 April 1957) is the Chief Executive of the Medical Research Council (MRC) in the UK and the Head of the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine and a Vice Principal of the University of Edinburgh.
