John Porter (New York Politician)
John Porter (October 24, 1790 Hadley, Hampshire County, Massachusetts – February 3, 1874 Auburn, Cayuga County, New York) was an American politician from New York. Life He graduated from Williams College in 1810. He then studied law in Albany, New York, was admitted to the bar in 1815, and commenced practice in Auburn. He served as District Attorney of Cayuga County from 1821 to 1828. In 1825, he married Abigail M. Phillips (1800–1886), a niece of Congressman Gurdon S. Mumford (1764–1831), and they had five children. He was Surrogate of Cayuga County from 1828 to 1836. He was a member of the New York State Senate (6th D.) from 1843 to 1846, sitting in the 66th, 67th, 68th and 69th New York State Legislatures. He was buried at the Fort Hill Cemetery in Auburn. Hadley (, ) is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 5,325 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Springfield, Massachusetts Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area around the Hampshire and Mountain Farms Malls along Route 9 is a major shopping destination for the surrounding communities. History Early Hadley was first settled in 1659 and was officially incorporated in 1661. The former Norwottuck was renamed for Hadleigh, Suffolk. Its settlers were primarily a discontented group of families from the Puritan colonies of Hartford and Wethersfield, Connecticut, who petitioned to start a new colony up north after some controversy over doctrine in the local church. The settlement was led by John Russell. The first settler inside of Hadley was Nathaniel Dickinson, who surveyed the streets of what is now Hadley, Hatfield, and Amherst. Charles Talbot Porter (January 18, 1826 – August 28, 1910) was an American lawyer, engineer, and inventor of mechanical devices, particularly the high-speed steam engine. He was recipient of the 1909 John Fritz Medal. Born in Auburn, New York, Porter was the son of the John Porter, a lawyer and politician. John Beardsley (November 9, 1783 – May 11, 1857) was an American farmer, merchant, banker and politician from New York. Life He was born on November 9, 1783, in Southbury, Connecticut, the son of Eliakim Beardsley (1744–1798) and Esther (Sherman) Beardsley (1748–1822). On December 16, 1804, he married Alice Booth (1786–1877), and they had twelve children.
