John Nightingale (police Officer)
Sir John Cyprian Nightingale (16 September 1913 – 1 October 2002) was a British police officer who rose to be Chief Constable of Essex Constabulary. He was born in Brixton, London, but after the death of his mother in the 1918 influenza epidemic went to live with other family members in South London. He was educated at the Roman Catholic Cardinal Vaughan School in Kensington and University College, London, where he gained a degree in the Classics. Classics. In 1935 he joined the Metropolitan Police as a constable and was selected to go the Metropolitan Police College at Hendon for training as an officer, after which he was appointed Junior Station Inspector. Promoted to Station Inspector at Chelsea Police Station he was awarded the British Empire Medal for Bravery in October 1941 for rescuing a man trapped in a bombed building. The Police Long Service and Good Conduct Medal is a decoration for police officers of the United Kingdom. First instituted in 1951, the medal is presented for twenty aggregate years of service in the police services of the United Kingdom. Queen's Police Medal
The King's Police Medal (KPM) is awarded to police in the United Kingdom for gallantry or distinguished service. It was also formerly awarded within the wider British Empire, including Commonwealth of Nations, Commonwealth countries, most of which now have their own honours systems. The medal was established on 7 July 1909 as the King's Police Medal (KPM), initially inspired by the need to recognise the gallantry of the police officers involved in the Tottenham Outrage. Renamed the King's Police and Fire Services Medal (KPFSM) in 1940, it was replaced on 19 May 1954 by the Queen's Police Medal (QPM), when a separate Queen's Fire Service Medal was also instituted.
