John Nicoll (chronicler)
John Nicoll (c.1590–1668), was a Scottish chronicler who recorded the political events of his day which were later published and are used as a primary source by historians. Biography Nicoll according to statements in his chronicle was born and brought up in Glasgow, the year of his birth being probably 1590. He became a member of the Society of Writers to the Signet on 19 October 1609. He was a public notary in Edinburgh and he seems to have enjoyed the confidence of the Covenanters. However, he maintained a link Glasgow becoming a burgess of the city in 1615, before becoming a burgess of Edinburgh in 1619. Not improbably he was the John Nicoll who was nominated as clerk to the general assembly at Glasgow in November 1638, when Sir Archibald Johnstone of Warriston was elected. Nicoll composed his chronicle partly from notes of what happened within his immediate experience, and partly from accounts in the newspapers and public intelligencers of the time. John Cochran Nicoll (October 7, 1793 – November 16, 1863) was a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the District of Georgia, the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia and the United States District Court for the Southern District of Georgia. Allardyce Nicoll
John Ramsay Allardyce Nicoll (28 June 1894 – 17 April 1976) was a British literary scholar and teacher. Allardyce Nicoll was born in Partick, Glasgow, and educated at Stirling High School and the University of Glasgow, where he was the G. A. Clark scholar in English. He became a lecturer at King's College London in 1920 and took the chair of English at East London College (later Queen Mary's College) in 1923. In 1933 he went to Yale University as professor of the history of drama and dramatic criticism and chair of the drama department. He established a strong graduate programme in theatre history. Around 1943–45 he performed war work at the British embassy in Washington. From 1945 to 1961 he headed the English Department at the University of Birmingham; from 1951 to 1961 he was also founding director of the Shakespeare Institute at Birmingham. John Fearns Nicoll
Sir John Fearns Nicoll (26 April 1899 – 12 January 1981) was a British colonial administrator who served as Governor of Singapore from 1952 to 1955. Early years and colonial service Nicoll was born in 1899 and attended Carlisle Grammar School, Pembroke College, Oxford and University of Oxford and embarked on a colonial career in British Protectorate of North Borneo in 1921. Nicoll became Deputy Colonial Secretary of the British Crown Colony Trinidad and Tobago in 1937, the Colonial Secretary of the British Colony of Fiji from 1944 to 1949. During this time, he served as Acting Governor twice, in 1944 and 1947. This was followed by his appointment as administrator and Colonial Secretary of Hong Kong in 1949. Nicoll became Governor of Singapore in 1952 and was present during the 1954 National Service riots and left the Governorship the following year. Bodmin (UK Parliament Constituency)
Bodmin was the name of a parliamentary constituency in Cornwall from 1295 until 1983. Initially, it was a parliamentary borough, which returned two Members of Parliament to the House of Commons of England and later the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom until the 1868 general election, when its representation was reduced to one member. The old borough was abolished with effect from the 1885 general election, but the name was transferred to a county constituency, which elected a single member until the constituency was abolished with effect from the 1983 general election, when the area it then covered was divided between the existing North Cornwall and the new Cornwall South East. Johnny Nicol
Johnny Nicol is a jazz singer born in Ayr, Queensland. Nicol began his career in 1958 as a member of The Maori Troubadours and recorded an album, ''A Little This, A Little That'', with them. He then went on to perform in on the Gold Coast then in Italy, Las Vegas and throughout England, then on a cruise ship between New York and the Bahamas. Later he proved very popular in South-east Asia. He returned to Australia in 1969, and in 1972 hosted an ABC Radio music show in which he introduced emerging talent Renee Geyer to a wider audience. He featured in a band with Col Nolan called The Col Nolan Soul Syndicate, which released the Live at Jason's LP. Following that he released a solo album, ''Touch of Blue'' (Phonogram, 1975). Nicol has since released four more solo albums, two CDs and a DVD. With Col Nolan he opened the Australian tours for such greats as Benny Goodman's last tour and also the Modern Jazz Quartet (MJQ).
