John Nicholl (mariner)
John Nicholl (fl. 1605–1637?) was an English mariner and author who joined an expedition to the English colony Guiana in 1605. He was shipwrecked and rescued by Spaniards who imprisoned him as a spy. He returned to England in 1607 and published an account of his adventures. Life He was one of 67 Englishmen who on 12 April 1605 sailed in the ''Olive Branch'', at the charge of Sir Olyff Leigh, to join the colony which had been planted by Captain Charles Leigh on the river "Wiapica" (Oyapoc) in Guiana, their leader being Captain Nicholas St. John. Off course, after 17 weeks at sea, the put in at Saint Lucia in the West Indies. Here St. John decided to remain for a time with Nicholl and his party, and to allow the vessel to go home. Sir John Nicholl
Sir John Nicholl (16 March 1759 – 26 August 1838) was a Welsh Member of Parliament and judge. As a judge he was noted "for inflexible impartiality and great strength and soundness of judgement". Early history Nicholl was born in 1759, the second son of John Nicholl of Llan-maes, a small village near Llantwit Major in Wales. He was educated at Cowbridge and Bristol Grammar Schools, before gaining entry to St John's College, Oxford, in 1775. He graduated as Bachelor of Civil Law in 1780 and as Doctor of Civil Law in 1785. He was called to the bar of the Doctors' Commons in 1785. Professional career Nicholl built an extensive practice and on 6 November 1798 he succeeded Sir William Scott as King's Advocate and was knighted as was custom for the position. John Nicholl (antiquary)
John Nicholl F.S.A. (1790–1871) was an English antiquary. Life Nicholl was born at Stratford Green, Essex. His father, a brewer, died a few months later. In 1822 he married Elizabeth Sarah Rahn, whose family had arrived in England from France following the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. They had three sons (Edward Hadham, John and Conrad Rahn) and two daughters (Elizabeth and Mary Augusta). He died at his home in Islington and was buried at Theydon Garnon, Essex. Nicholl extended an interest in his own family's genealogy to that of the wider Essex gentry and worked on the archives of the Ironmongers Company (of which he was a member). In 1842 and 1843 he traveled in Europe, compiling architectural and landscape sketches and collecting further genealogical material. John Iltyd Nicholl
John Nicholl (21 August 1797 – 27 January 1853) was a Welsh Member of the UK Parliament and was, for a very short time in 1835, a Lord Commissioner of the Treasury. His father was Sir John Nicholl, who like his son was a judge and politician. Personal history Born in 1797 to John Nicholl and Judy Birt, Nicholl was educated at Westminster and in 1816 obtained a place at Christ Church, Oxford. He took a first class in Classics before he achieved a Doctor of Civil Law degree in 1825, and was elected as an Advocate of the Doctors' Commons in 1826. In 1838, on the death of his father, he became the successor to the family estate, Merthyr Mawr House Nicholl was married to Jane Harriet in 1821, daughter of Thomas Mansel Talbot and brother of Christopher Rice Mansel Talbot. They had seven children, and the family estate was inherited by his eldest son, John Cole Nicholl. Political career In 1832 Nicholl was elected to the House of Commons, winning the seat for Cardiff.
