John Newberry (ice Hockey)
John Newberry (born April 8, 1962) is a Canadian retired professional ice hockey player. He played twenty-two games in the National Hockey League with the Montreal Canadiens and Hartford Whalers. Port Alberni () is a city located on Vancouver Island in the province of British Columbia, Canada. Penalty (ice Hockey)
A penalty in ice hockey is a punishment for an infringement of the rules. Most penalties are enforced by sending the offending player to a penalty box for a set number of minutes. During the penalty the player may not participate in play. Penalties are called and enforced by the referee, or in some cases, the linesman. The offending team may not replace the player on the ice (although there are some exceptions, such as fighting), leaving them short-handed as opposed to full strength. When the opposing team is said to be on a ''power play'', they will have one more player on the ice than the short-handed team. The short-handed team is said to be "on the penalty kill" until the penalty expires and the penalized player returns to play. While standards vary somewhat between leagues, most leagues recognize several common varieties of penalties, as well as common infractions. The 1982–83 NHL season was the 66th season of the National Hockey League. The New York Islanders won their fourth Stanley Cup in a row with their second consecutive finals sweep by beating the Edmonton Oilers four games to none. No team in any major professional North American sport has won four consecutive playoff championships since. For the first time the Hobey Baker Award was conferred after the conclusion of the regular season. After the season four teams from the WCHA left to join the CCHA. The Western Hockey League (WHL) is a major junior ice hockey league based in Western Canada and the Northwestern United States. Victoria Cougars
The Victoria Cougars were a major league professional ice hockey team that played in the Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA) from 1911 to 1924 under various names, and (after the PCHA's merger with the Western Canada Hockey League) in the Western Hockey League (WHL) from 1924 to 1926. The team was based in Victoria, British Columbia and won the Stanley Cup in 1925, becoming the final non-NHL team to win the Cup. The 1979–80 WHL season was the 14th season for the Western Hockey League. Eleven teams completed a 72-game season. The Regina Pats won the President's Cup.
